An Auckland father says he’s relieved he and his son weren’t hurt after what appeared to be a thrown beer bottle struck their car while they were travelling along the motorway in the CBD yesterday.<\/p>\n
Jan, who asked to be identified by his first name, was travelling south on State Highway 1 at around 7.40pm on Saturday near the Cook St exit after leaving North Shore Hospital when he heard “a loud pop” from the roof of his vehicle.<\/p>\n
He initially thought he had hit debris or blown a tyre.<\/p>\n
“I pulled over on the left side of the highway, looked around and saw nothing,” he told 1News, saying he then decided to review his dashcam.<\/p>\n
“When I reviewed it for the second time, I saw a flying object. When I downloaded it through my phone and zoom it, I saw a brown glass bottle.”<\/p>\n
The footage shows the bottle arcing through the air moments before impact.<\/p>\n
The bottle had struck the roof of his vehicle, leaving two large dents. Jan said he also found liquid splashed across the car.<\/p>\n
“It was bubbly. I\u2019m assuming it\u2019s beer or alcohol… I just hope it wasn\u2019t urine. I didn\u2019t smell it,” he said.<\/p>\n
Jan’s son was seated in the back of the car at the time. Both were startled by the impact.<\/p>\n
“We were a little bit shocked, to be honest,” he said. <\/p>\n
“If I had been going a bit slower or faster, it could have hit my windscreen. It would have been a whole lot different story.”<\/p>\n
