That is run by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/hawkes-bay-today\/news\/rebrand-for-napier-health-care-but-the-service-remains-the-same\/M46U5UTV5VCV5H4G7HC2KZHJDA\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/hawkes-bay-today\/news\/rebrand-for-napier-health-care-but-the-service-remains-the-same\/M46U5UTV5VCV5H4G7HC2KZHJDA\/\">a group of Napier general practices<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">At night, from 8pm to 8am, Health NZ then provides nurses for urgent walk-in care at the centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">Health NZ confirmed between four and five people used the service each night, on average, and it was staffed by two nurses on a 12-hour shift.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">Between January 1 and March 1, the overnight service has been closed 13 times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">That equates to it being unavailable over 20% of the time over that period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">Napier doctor Alex Hedley, who is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/hawkes-bay-today\/news\/election-2026-labour-candidate-for-napier-electorate-in-next-years-general-election-named\/2OK75MIHKJE7PPKUW5UWOKM7GM\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/hawkes-bay-today\/news\/election-2026-labour-candidate-for-napier-electorate-in-next-years-general-election-named\/2OK75MIHKJE7PPKUW5UWOKM7GM\/\">Labour\u2019s candidate for the Napier electorate<\/a>, said the situation was \u201csimply not good enough\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Dr Alex Hedley is the Labour candidate for the Napier electorate in the 2026 general election. Photo \/ Supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cPeople presenting to health services overnight means something has seriously gone wrong, so not having that security of being able to access healthcare, particularly if people can\u2019t get transport to Hastings, does impact and damage trust in our health services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">Dr Hedley said Napier\u2019s urgent medical care needed a \u201crethink\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">He said he would push for overnight doctors to be available on-site at Napier Health if elected in November, although he added that was not currently a Labour Party policy or commitment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThat is not a Labour Party policy, but that is my commitment to the community here is advocating strongly for the restoration of overnight [doctor] services in Napier.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">Napier National MP Katie Nimon said the closures this year came down to unplanned absences, such as staff sickness or staff being required at Hawke\u2019s Bay Hospital ED.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">She said, following Government changes last year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/hawkes-bay-today\/news\/napier-overnight-urgent-care-to-be-retained-and-enhanced-following-community-pushback-wont-include-a-doctor\/LKFURMZJP5HNHM5YIDHHDK7H7Y\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/hawkes-bay-today\/news\/napier-overnight-urgent-care-to-be-retained-and-enhanced-following-community-pushback-wont-include-a-doctor\/LKFURMZJP5HNHM5YIDHHDK7H7Y\/\">to improve the overnight service<\/a>, there was now registered nurse prescribers available at night.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Napier MP Katie Nimon says staffing constraints are the main reason for the closures.
