Film Festival 2026 has announced the complete list of winners across its competition and audience categories.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tJeremy Xido\u2019s \u201cSons of Detroit\u201d garnered the top documentary prize, Marc Evan\u2019s \u201cMr Burton won the award for Best U.S. narrative feature, and Emmanuel Courcol\u2019s \u201cThe March Band\u201d took home the best international narrative feature award.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tXido wrote, directed, and starred in \u201cSons of Detroit,\u201d which explores his complicated upbringing in 1970s Detroit. The film debuted at DOC NYC in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tXido said the SIFF programming team reached out to him during the film\u2019s run at DOC NYC and requested a screener.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cLess than 24 hours later, we received the most remarkable, perceptive, and incisive email back from them about \u201cSons of Detroit,\u201d Xido told Variety. \u201cThey clearly liked the film but also felt very strongly that the audiences in Sedona would respond to it. We were all bedazzled by the enthusiasm. Sedona wasn\u2019t on our radar at the time, but their unwavering certainty moved us. SIFF is a beloved festival. We have spoken with friends and colleagues about SIFF, and across the board, they say it\u2019s one of their favorite festivals in the country. So here we are. And we could not be happier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cSons of Detroit\u201d was one of 36 feature docs that screened at SIFF, which began on Feb. 21.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe 2025 Tribeca Festival best documentary feature winner, <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/news\/tribeca-festival-2025-winners-1236429733\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cNatchez,\u201d <\/a>won SIFF\u2019s best non-fiction storytelling prize. Directed by Suzannah Herbert\u2019s \u201cNatchez,\u201d the film captures an unsettling clash between history and memory in a small Mississippi town. Last summer, Oscilloscope Laboratories acquired U.S. distribution rights to \u201cNatchez,\u201d which will be broadcast on Independent Lens this spring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAnother doc that debuted at the 2025 Tribeca Festival, Alexander Hammer\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/news\/amy-schumer-room-to-move-destigmatize-autism-1236424050\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cRoom to Move\u201d<\/a> won SIFF\u2019s Non-Fiction New Visions Award. Hammer\u2019s intimate doc follows acclaimed NYC choreographer and dancer Jenn Freeman as she navigates receiving an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis at age 33.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tKahane Corn Cooperman\u2019s \u201cCREEDE U.S.A.\u201d \u00a0garnered the prize for Best Indie-Spirit Documentary. About a remote Colorado mountain mining town that becomes an unexpected model for public discourse, the film debuted at the South by Southwest Film Festival last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThis year, we had over 1700 film submissions and nearly 500 screenplay competition entries,\u201d said SIFF executive director Patrick Schweiss, \u201cFrom the first, two-day <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/sedona-international-film-festival\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sedona-international-film-festival\" data-tag=\"sedona-international-film-festival\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sedona International Film Festival<\/a> over thirty years ago, that kind of growth makes us all so proud, and it\u2019s all thanks to the filmmakers and the stories they tell. We\u2019ve always put filmmakers first, and the results, year over year, make SIFF a really special event for everyone involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tJan Krawitz first attended SIFF in 2005 with her feature documentary, \u201cBig Enough.\u201d This year she returned with her 17-minute short doc \u201cNice Girls Don\u2019t Ask,\u201d a film that uses \u201csocial guidance\u201d films of the 1950s as a cautionary tale for the present.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI was aware of (SIFF\u2019s) dedication to humanistic documentary and fiction films that offer captivating narratives,\u201d Krawitz said. \u201cNice Girls Don\u2019t Ask\u201d is created exclusively from \u201csocial guidance\u201d films of the 1950s, so it appeals to the type of cinephiles who enthusiastically patronize this festival.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDirector Mat Hames was at SIFF with his doc \u201cA Life Outside: American Mountain Guides.\u201d The film follows modern mountain guides in the Tetons who risk their lives to bring clients home safely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cSedona is full of avid hikers, so SIFF felt like a natural home (for the film),\u201d Hames said. \u201cWe hope SIFF helps our film start a conversation about the physical and mental health benefits of getting into wild places, and that enthusiasm helps it with our PBS premiere later this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSIFF, which ran from Feb. 21 through March 1. In addition to screening 36 feature docs, the lineup included 32 doc shorts, 36 feature-length narrative films and 42 animated and narrative shorts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/
