The Charlatans<\/a>\u2019\u00a0Tim Burgess<\/a> paid tribute to The Stone Roses<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Primal Scream<\/a> bassist Mani at the BRIT Awards<\/a>. Watch the moment below.<\/p>\n

The Manchester music icon\u00a0passed away from respiratory issues in November at the age of 63<\/a>. He\u00a0was laid to rest the following month at a funeral at Manchester Cathedral<\/a>, which was attended by\u00a0Liam Gallagher<\/a>,\u00a0Paul Weller<\/a>,\u00a0Ian Brown<\/a>\u00a0and more.<\/p>\n

During the In Memoriam section of last night\u2019s (February 28) ceremony, Burgess gave a speech about the late musician, telling the audience: \u201cI\u2019m here tonight to pay tribute to a good friend of mine.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know he was loved by so many of you here tonight and many more watching on TV,\u201d he continued. \u201cMani was a kid from a few miles up the road. He changed music and inspired generations ahead of him. These songs he recorded will be his legacy, along with his unforgettable smile and uncontainable enthusiasm.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was truly one of the phenomenal ones, and they are far and few between. So, I just want you to think about Mani for a moment,\u201d he said as the crowd cheered.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can cherish the thought that we got to experience our time and his time together. Let\u2019s take a few moments to remember Mani and some of the people who we lost in the music industry, who we\u2019ve lost in the last year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ahead of his speech, Burgess spoke to NME on the red carpet and told us: \u201cI think it\u2019s important to recognise Mani. I mean, his legacy\u2019s in the songs, but it\u2019s great to be able to do that here.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe records that he played on inspired generations,\u201d he added. Watch the full interview below.<\/p>\n

The annual awards show went down at Manchester\u2019s Co-op Live on Saturday night<\/a>, marking the first time it has ever been held outside of London.<\/p>\n

Another tribute to Mani last night came from Geese<\/a>, with the band\u2019s Max Bassin saying in their speech for winning International Group of the Year<\/a>: \u201cI just want to say, free Palestine, fuck ICE, RIP Mani,\u00a0let\u2019s\u00a0go Geese.\u201d<\/p>\n

In\u00a0a tribute to Mani,\u00a0NME\u00a0described how the late musician \u201cheld a rare place in the world of bass heroes\u201d<\/a>\u00a0and \u201cdefined a scene with some of the most infectious and hypnotic basslines ever recorded.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBoth weighty and melodic, Mani\u2019s bewitching basslines became the bedrock and, often, the driving force of The Roses\u2019 breakthrough tracks \u2018Elephant Stone\u2019, \u2018Made Of Stone\u2019 and \u2018She Bangs The Drums\u2019, and underpinned the band\u2019s low-slung funk development on \u2018Fools Gold\u2019 \u2013 arguably a four-minute encapsulation of the entire late-\u201980s dance rock scene,\u201d it read.<\/p>\n

Among those who paid tribute to the bassist were\u00a0My Bloody Valentine, who dedicated their first tour in seven years to him<\/a>,\u00a0Oasis, who played \u2018Live Forever\u2019 in his honour,\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0Richard Ashcroft, who played a cover of \u2018She Bangs The Drums\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In January, Manchester United paid their respects ahead of an Arsenal game<\/a>, with players wearing custom jackets reading \u2018Mani 1962-2025\u2019 alongside artwork reminiscent of the first Stone Roses album.<\/p>\n

Since then, a crowdfunder has been launched for a permanent tribute mural to Mani in Manchester.<\/a><\/p>\n

As for the BRITs, it was Olivia Dean<\/a> who ended up dominating this year, winning four awards, including Artist of the Year, Song of the Year and Album of the Year.
