{"id":310156,"date":"2026-03-03T00:51:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-03T00:51:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/310156\/"},"modified":"2026-03-03T00:51:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-03T00:51:08","slug":"taurangas-marra-marine-to-debut-first-custom-build-at-auckland-boat-show","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/310156\/","title":{"rendered":"Tauranga\u2019s Marra Marine to debut first custom build at Auckland Boat Show"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">In-water displays will span 1.3 kilometres along the waterfront at Jellicoe Harbour and Wynyard Wharf. <\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">Kae\u0101, which means to wander or roam in M\u0101ori, is a 13.8m custom-built boat designed for a Wellington-based client. <\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">Marra Marine director Maddie Marra said this project was \u201cvery important\u201d for the business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt\u2019s a massive milestone, and we are in a unique position given that we are quite boutique down here in Tauranga, where we can specialise in that slightly smaller boat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">She told the Bay of Plenty Times there were a lot of big boat yards in Auckland that specialised in vessels between 16 metres and 25m.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThat\u2019s their bread and butter, and we come in with that 12m to 16m size, which gives us a little bit of a point of difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">She said Marra Marine was \u201cmassive\u201d on working with local marine industry leaders to raise the profile of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/bay-of-plenty-times\/news\/tauranga-marine-precinct-sale-finalised-after-court-dismisses-injunction\/OMVTNB6NCFABHOGLSC2CVH23ZQ\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/bay-of-plenty-times\/news\/tauranga-marine-precinct-sale-finalised-after-court-dismisses-injunction\/OMVTNB6NCFABHOGLSC2CVH23ZQ\/\">Tauranga as a world-class marine industry<\/a> for new builds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt was very exciting for us to work alongside the designer, owner and various subcontractors to bring the project to life.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Maddie and Tim Marra from Marra Marine.\" class=\"article-media__image responsively-lazy\" data-test-ui=\"article-media__image\"\/>Maddie and Tim Marra from Marra Marine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">Maddie said the Kae\u0101 was a 20-month build, was completely built in Tauranga, and would cost about $2.2 million to purchase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt\u2019s a really detailed project in terms of all the finishing and the workmanship that\u2019s involved to have an elite-class boat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">The boat was built from triple-skin plywood, vacuum-packed together, with layers of fibreglass inside and out for strength and weight savings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThat bespoke custom boat comes with a price point, for sure, but it is the Rolls-Royce of cruiser boats,\u201d Maddie said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cShe was a big project; it was very much a labour of love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">Marra Marine owner-operator and Maddie\u2019s husband Tim Marra has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/topic\/marine\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/topic\/marine\/\">in the industry<\/a> for more than two decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">He said showcasing Marra Marine\u2019s first custom-built vessel at the Auckland Boat Show was a \u201cmassive dream.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cTo be part of the bigger industry in terms of the new build market, it\u2019s pretty special.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Kae\u0101 was a 20-month build and completely built in Tauranga.\" class=\"article-media__image responsively-lazy\" data-test-ui=\"article-media__image\"\/>Kae\u0101 was a 20-month build and completely built in Tauranga.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">Tim said it would be \u201ccool\u201d to be among other boat builders he had known for a long time, who were well respected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt means something to know that we can stand on our own two feet and produce a product like I\u2019ve been doing for many years with other people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">Tim said he was feeling \u201cfairly positive\u201d about the anticipated response of the Kae\u0101 at the boat show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThere\u2019ll be other production boats similar, but Kae\u0101 will stand alone and hopefully, with that, we\u2019ll get some good traction. <\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI don\u2019t want my last 25 years of blood, sweat, and tears to go to waste.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">The vessel was designed by Bill Upfold, who is the principal designer at Elite Marine Design.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">The owner wanted a timeless classic-looking vessel that could get him to Marlborough Sounds from Wellington or Picton in an hour from the marina.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Elite Kae\u0101, designed by Bill Upfold, is the first custom build from Marra Marine, a Tauranga business established by Tim and Maddie Marra. Photo \/ Geoff Cox<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">The boat needed to cruise at 27 knots, have only two cabins, large open living spaces and an open cockpit for fishing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">He said the initial construction drawings took several months, and the complete design evolved over the entire build with minor tweaks and smaller detail drawings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cLike everything, there is some trade-off; it\u2019s all about getting the balance right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">He said the Kae\u0101\u2019s styling allowed him to incorporate a \u201cfine entry\u201d for good seakeeping performance and a decreasing vee to ensure easy planning. <\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cMy sedan boats are sportier in aesthetics, but Kae\u0101s owner was after a more sedate classic style with a shippy feel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">Upfold said Marra Marine was great to work alongside and never lost sight of the end goal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"BseiQmTTCbyVEQR\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThe greatest thing with these custom builds is the partnership between the owner, designer and builder, all striving for the same thing, creating and realising the dream.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"The vessel needed to cruise at 27 knots, have only two cabins, large open living spaces and an open cockpit for fishing.
