Selena Gomez and husband Benny Blanco candidly discussed managing her bipolar disorder<\/a> together.<\/p>\n

Gomez appeared on Tuesday\u2019s episode of Blanco\u2019s podcast, \u201cFriends Keep Secrets,\u201d<\/a> and in a conversation with his best friend, Lil Dicky, and Lil Dicky\u2019s wife, Kristin Batalucco, the former Disney Channel star talked about her mental health issues.<\/p>\n

She described getting diagnosed with bipolar disorder as \u201cf\u2013king complicated,\u201d explaining that her journey included multiple therapists and four different rehabs.<\/p>\n

Blanco, 37, jumped in and said his wife would sometimes have moments of \u201cmania\u201d and didn\u2019t know what they were at the time.<\/p>\n

Blanco said Gomez sometimes has manic episodes and doesn\u2019t remember them afterwards. Friends Keep Secrets\/YouTube<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019ll start to realize she\u2019s having it after, and sometimes she doesn\u2019t even remember when it\u2019s happening,\u201d he shared. \u201cIt\u201ds such a delicate thing \u2019cause you\u2019re not supposed to technically talk to the person, really, about it while they\u2019re deep in it, and even dating her, she\u2019s, like, so hyper-aware.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019ll be like, \u2018I think I\u2019m feeling a little manic.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Gomez, 33, said she wasn\u2019t ashamed of having manic episodes, and that recognizing them for what they are meant she could identify them quicker.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it is helpful to have a partner that will understand where maybe the temperature is at, and meet you where you are, and then you kind of gradually understand what\u2019s happening,\u201d she said of Blanco.<\/p>\n

Gomez also shared that getting diagnosed allowed her to live life \u201cfreely,\u201d and that it\u2019s helped her understand her reaction to things.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would act out of fear and I would act out of love, I\u2019d act out of passion, it was all inconsistent,\u201d she recalled. \u201cIt was crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cHands to Myself\u201d singer first revealed her bipolar disorder in 2020, after having a public breakdown <\/a>in 2018.<\/p>\n

Back in October 2024, she said she surrounds herself with only one or two people she trusts<\/a> when she\u2019s having a bad mental health day.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes isolating myself when I\u2019m not feeling great can be scary. I think all these thoughts,\u201d she said during an Instagram interview with influencer Rami Bader. \u201cBut if I\u2019m around people that make me feel good, and make me feel like I can say anything, that always helps me.\u201d<\/p>\n

She told Vanity Fair in September 2024 that she\u2019s now been \u201cproperly medicated,\u201d and she also uses temperature \u2014 which can include cold water and space heaters \u2014 as a \u201chealing mechanism\u201d<\/a> during physical and mental health flare-ups.<\/p>\n
