{"id":312997,"date":"2026-03-04T19:23:11","date_gmt":"2026-03-04T19:23:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/312997\/"},"modified":"2026-03-04T19:23:11","modified_gmt":"2026-03-04T19:23:11","slug":"zimbabwe-clarifies-why-it-rushed-to-ban-the-exportation-of-some-of-its-most-critical-minerals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/312997\/","title":{"rendered":"Zimbabwe clarifies why it rushed to ban the exportation of some of its most critical minerals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n        Recently, Polite Kambamura, Zimbabwe\u2019s mines minister, reiterated this logic, asserting that under-declaration by miners constituted a problem too significant to be overlooked.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        He noted that the problem had become so prevalent that the administration was forced to move its disciplinary timeline a year behind.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        The administration originally intended to begin the expiration ban on lithium concentrates next year, but initiated it as quickly as possible due to mounting output and additional export permits.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        \u201cThe ban will be in effect as long as conditions or new expectations of the government are not met,\u201d Kambamura said to reporters at a post-Cabinet briefing in Harare, the country\u2019s capital.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        \u201cAfter the announcement, prices were reviewed upwards just because of one word from the government of Zimbabwe,\u201d he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        Following investments totaling billions of dollars by companies such as Sinomine Resource Group, Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt Co., and Chengxin Lithium Group for mine construction, Zimbabwe rapidly emerged as a key source of lithium concentrate for Chinese refineries, as reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-03-03\/zimbabwe-cites-under-declaration-in-lithium-export-ban\" id=\"0e562ec0-3252-4978-bde4-931a1c6811da\" data-link-role-code=\"open_new_tab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        Consequently, governments across the continent are now seeking to compel mining enterprises to undertake local processing and refining of minerals, in a bid to enhance the value of their natural resources.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        \u201cThe geology of our country is multi-element, which means one deposit can contain many other minerals, for example, the PGM deposits,\u201d Kambamura said, referring to platinum group metals.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        \u201cThe same applies with the pegmatite deposit where we get lithium.\n    <\/p>\n<p>                    <img width=\"790\" height=\"520\" alt=\"African lithium producers risk export setback as U.S. develops alternative extraction model\" title=\"African lithium producers risk export setback as U.S. develops alternative extraction model\" class=\"image lazyloaded imgWithMetaData\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf8,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg'%20width%3D'790'%20height%3D'520'%20data-ring-placeholder%3D'1'%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-original=\"https:\/\/ocdn.eu\/pulscms-transforms\/1\/NnUktkpTURBXy80Mzc0NWNhMmJhMTU1MGYzNzA1OTA1YjMwZjY4MGI0Yy5wbmeRlQLNAxbNAgjCww\" fetchpriority=\"low\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>\n        The mines minister further revealed that the <a href=\"https:\/\/africa.businessinsider.com\/local\/markets\/chinas-lithium-price-soars-after-zimbabwe-export-ban\/m171pwc\" id=\"dba2251b-369c-46a7-9288-67ec38c9bac0\" data-link-role-code=\"open_new_tab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">export prohibition<\/a> encompasses lithium concentrates, in addition to any raw or unbeneficiated minerals that have not undergone value addition.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        Zimbabwe\u2019s ban on exporting some minerals <\/p>\n<p>\n        Last week, Zimbabwe\u2019s mines ministry, via a statement seen by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/zimbabwe-bans-exports-all-raw-minerals-lithium-concentrates-2026-02-25\/\" id=\"3c58d4f8-feae-45ad-8fa3-d4813dae405a\" data-link-role-code=\"open_new_tab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Reuters<\/a>, announced the immediate and indefinite suspension of the exportation of all raw minerals and lithium concentrates.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        &#8220;Government expects cooperation of the mining industry on this measure, which has been taken in the national interest,&#8221; the statement said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        &#8220;Government remains committed to &#8230; in-country value addition and beneficiation, compliance, and accountability in the exportation of <a href=\"https:\/\/africa.businessinsider.com\/local\/markets\/zimbabwes-processing-for-white-gold-deepens-with-another-sulphate-plant\/rhczhhc\" id=\"7d5609dc-1c64-46fe-8611-6bacd9f5611d\" data-link-role-code=\"open_new_tab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Zimbabwe&#8217;s mineral resources<\/a>,\u201d it added.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        The Mines Ministry announced that it will realign export procedures due to &#8220;continued malpractices during the exportation of minerals&#8221;
