Photo\/ NZME<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">The controversial legislation raised the threshold for proving work had been historically undervalued when making a pay equity claim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Opponents said it would make it harder for women in female-dominated industries to make a claim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">All opposition parties opposed it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Thirty-three claims, representing thousands of workers, were dropped.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">\u014ct\u016bmoetai resident Christine Murphy, and Margaret Down and her daughter Louise Down, both from Pyes Pa, were among today\u2019s protesters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Murphy said she \u201cfully supported\u201d the Unions Bay of Plenty\u2019s fight for equality for women \u2013 not just over equal pay but in every aspect of their lives \u2013 especially those in lower-paid jobs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Margaret Down said she was a member of the NZ Working Women\u2019s Council in the 1970s and was a former primary school teacher who had fought for pay equity for women many times over the years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">She said the Bay of Plenty Times \u201ccould not print\u201d what she really thought about the pay equity law changes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWomen have been fighting for pay equity for decades, and these changes are disgusting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Omanu resident Heidi Tidmarsh said she felt \u201coutraged\u201d about the gap in women\u2019s pay compared to men.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe can run a home, juggle caring for kids, work, and women are very effective, skilled workers, and we shouldn\u2019t be underpaid and undervalued.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Unions Bay of Plenty co-convenor Jason Smythe said: \u201cWe must vote to ensure that our next Government is committed to reinstating and funding pay equity for all workers. Photo \/ NZME <\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Tauranga MP Sam Uffindell said the Government, which amended the process for raising and settling a pay equity claim, remained committed to addressing gender discrimination in the workplace. <\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAs of the June 2025 quarter, New Zealand\u2019s national gender pay gap is 5.2%, the lowest on record. This is a significant decrease from 8.2% in June 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cEqual pay is not being changed in any way. It doesn\u2019t make sense to compare administrative staff with mechanical engineers. He also spoke to some of the protesters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">He said their views were \u201cwell-intentioned\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">But he did not agree the gender pay gap was as large as being purported by the Unions Bay Plenty and reiterated there had been \u201csignificant progress\u201d in closing the gap.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThey did offer me a cupcake, but I don\u2019t have a sweet tooth.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Labour MP Jan Tinetti said Labour was committed to reinstating pay equity legislation and \u201cpaying women what they deserve\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\" Tauranga Labour list MP Jan Tinetti. Photo\/Supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Kahurangi Carter, the Green Party\u2019s spokesperson for women, said the party was committed to the demands from unions to repeal the legislation and fully fund pay equity claims. <\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cPay inequity disproportionately impacts M\u0101ori, Pacific and disabled women \u2013 the very communities facing the greatest barriers to fair pay.
