{"id":314232,"date":"2026-03-05T12:01:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-05T12:01:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/314232\/"},"modified":"2026-03-05T12:01:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T12:01:09","slug":"across-south-america-canopy-bridges-evolve-as-a-lifeline-for-tree-dwelling-wildlife","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/314232\/","title":{"rendered":"Across South America, canopy bridges evolve as a lifeline for tree-dwelling wildlife"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#13;<br \/>\n                              In the Amazon and Atlantic forests, field research is seeking new ways to understand the behavior of mammals like monkeys and sloths that depend on the treetops to move around and survive in different types of vegetation.Using photographic equipment on artificial bridges \u2014 whose ropes, nets and platforms are intertwined with trees to protect wildlife \u2014 researchers are mapping fauna in both continuous forests and fragmented areas, providing new scientific insights.Experts working to reduce the risks of roadkill and species\u2019 isolation in fragmented forest areas say studies are crucial to improving the installation of artificial crossings over highways.<\/p>\n<p>See All Key Ideas<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the Amazon Rainforest, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2025\/09\/more-than-half-the-worlds-forests-fragmented-in-20-years-but-protection-works-study\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">forest fragmentation<\/a> represents an escalating and existential threat to the preservation of fauna. Driven by intensive economic development, the expansion of agribusiness and large-scale infrastructure projects \u2014 such as highways, railways, power transmission lines and gas pipelines \u2014 continues carrying profound environmental risks.<\/p>\n<p>Foremost among these ecological pressures are the geographic isolation of animal populations and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2022\/05\/for-wildlife-on-brazils-highways-roadkill-is-just-the-tip-of-the-iceberg\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">high mortality rates resulting from roadkill<\/a> and other related accidents. Arboreal mammal species, including primates, sloths and porcupines, are among the most affected by this confinement, as their survival is strictly dependent on canopy connectivity.<\/p>\n<p>Paradoxically, these specialized tree-dwelling animals often benefit the least from standard environmental mitigation measures, such as the implementation of artificial crossings.<\/p>\n<p>To address critical gaps in understanding animal behavior and habitat use, biologists Justin Santiago and Lindsey Swierk from the State University of New York at Binghamton, U.S., conducted pioneering research in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon. The study site was located at the <a href=\"https:\/\/morphoinstitute.org\/actsperu\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\">Amazon Conservatory for Tropical Studies (ACTS)<\/a> Field Station within Napo-Sucusari Biological Reserve, a 1,674-hectare (4,137-acre) protected area near the city of Iquitos, in the northern region of Loreto.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers deployed a sophisticated system of canopy bridges that used a combination of nets, thick ropes and platforms situated at varying heights. These elements were integrated to form extensive suspended corridors designed to facilitate safe movement for wildlife from one treetop to another.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-194967 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Justin-Installing-Camera-Trap.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\"\/>A specialist installs a camera on a tree connected to the canopy bridge system in the Peruvian Amazon. Image courtesy of Elizabeth Benson.<\/p>\n<p>They also installed camera traps, which they used over a 21-day monitoring period to document the movements of several key species, including <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2025\/12\/stricter-rules-adopted-to-protect-sloths-from-pet-trade-and-selfie-tourism\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Linnaeus\u2019s two-toed sloth<\/a> (Choloepus didactylus), saki monkeys (Pithecia spp.), and the Amazonian long-tailed porcupine (Coendou longicaudatus), a species that was only <a href=\"https:\/\/g1.globo.com\/sp\/campinas-regiao\/terra-da-gente\/noticia\/2021\/11\/15\/estudo-revela-nova-especie-de-ourico-no-brasil.ghtml\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\">formally described in 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Their <a href=\"https:\/\/neotropical.pensoft.net\/article\/154791\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\">findings were published<\/a> in the journal Neotropical Biology and Conservation in September 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The scientists emphasize that understanding how animals use bridges within continuous, undisturbed forests is a prerequisite for implementing effective connectivity strategies in fragmented landscapes where environmental risks are far higher.<\/p>\n<p>Santiago told Mongabay that there\u2019s \u201cmuch to learn\u201d about artificial bridges. He also praised the scientific work focused on the use of new techniques for mapping fauna in different South American forest contexts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPreviously, studies were conducted through field surveys and with the help of tree climbers. The suspension bridge, as well as [proving useful] for the species studied, allows researchers to explore behaviors in a much more effective way,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Santiago, progress has been perceived over time. \u201cInternationally, suspension bridges have proven their effectiveness in various habitats, providing connectivity between them, increasing gene flow for endangered species [which keeps populations genetically healthy], and reducing mortality in areas near power lines and highways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-194966 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/ACTS-Canopy-Walkway.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\"\/>An artificial bridge for animal crossing, used in the Peruvian Amazon study. Image courtesy of Justin Santiago.<br \/>\nSaki monkeys\u2019 to-and-fro <\/p>\n<p>Fernanda Abra, a wildlife management specialist and postdoctoral researcher at the U.S.-based Smithsonian Institution, said the study in Peru provides vital scientific benchmarks for future bridge installation and monitoring.<\/p>\n<p>Abra, who wasn\u2019t involved in the study, specifically highlighted the unprecedented observation of saki monkeys, known in Brazil as <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2014\/09\/scientists-uncover-five-new-species-of-toupee-monkeys-in-the-amazon\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">parauacus<\/a>, using these artificial structures. \u201cSaki monkeys are considered an extremely sensitive primate genus and have never been recorded using <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2023\/01\/canopy-bridges-connect-forests-wildlife-and-international-researchers\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">man-made canopy bridges<\/a> before this research,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-194963 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Linnaeuss-Two-toed-Sloth.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1440\" height=\"810\"\/>A sloth crosses a canopy bridge in the Amazon. Image courtesy of Justin Santiago.<\/p>\n<p>Abra said that even when situated in well-preserved environments, these systems reveal \u201ccrucial data\u201d that informs the technical work of specialists in regions heavily impacted by forest fragmentation.<\/p>\n<p>Abra is herself a world-renowned expert on wildlife canopy bridges. In 2024, she <a href=\"https:\/\/ipe.org.br\/noticias\/oscar-da-natureza-pesquisadora-brasileira-que-luta-para-proteger-a-fauna-silvestreem-rodovias-ganha-premio-whitley-2024\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\">received<\/a> the Whitley Award, presented by the U.K. nonprofit Whitley Fund for Nature and popularly known as the \u201cgreen Oscars.\u201d As Mongabay <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2024\/06\/indigenous-people-in-the-amazon-are-helping-to-build-bridges-save-primates\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported at the time<\/a>, the award recognized Abra\u2019s work on forest canopy bridges in the Waimiri-Atroari Indigenous Territory, which connects the Brazilian cities of Manaus (capital of Amazonas state) and Boa Vista (capital of Roraima) via the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2022\/08\/as-roads-and-railways-threaten-primates-brazil-is-a-global-hotspot\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">controversial BR-174 highway<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe work is interesting and has practical applications. Today, in our area of impact mitigation for arboreal fauna, we seek to understand basic things,\u201d Abra said. \u201cFor example, which artificial bridge designs are most suitable for different types of locomotion: some monkeys move by brachiation [from branch to branch], some monkeys jump, and some monkeys are more terrestrial than arboreal. Therefore, understanding bridge design \u2014 its appearance, shape, and materials to be used \u2014 is essential for us to grow in this area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The challenges to reconnect the forest<\/p>\n<p>Experts have long identified two primary impacts on forest species from the presence of roads and other infrastructure: direct mortality from <a href=\"https:\/\/brasil.mongabay.com\/2025\/08\/relacao-entre-fauna-do-cerrado-e-rodovias-e-mais-complexa-do-que-se-supunha-aponta-estudo\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\">vehicle collisions<\/a>, and the more insidious \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2022\/09\/as-brazil-ramps-up-rail-projects-wildlife-kills-remain-understudied\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">barrier effect<\/a>.\u201d The latter occurs when animals become inhibited from crossing the open spaces created by infrastructure, leading to population isolation. This can result in cases of inbreeding, which degrades genetic health and can trigger rapid population decline, among other perils.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-194964 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Photograph-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\"\/>A researcher photographs an animal killed in a vehicle strike in the Amazon. Image courtesy of Patr\u00edcio Rocha.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with Mongabay, Abra mentioned a recommendation by Brazil\u2019s National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT), which is set to convert her Whitley Award-winning canopy bridge project into a standard model to be employed across the country.<\/p>\n<p>However, she said challenges persist nationwide, as Brazil combines a vast biodiversity of tree species with the world\u2019s fourth-largest road network \u2014 more than 1.7 million kilometers (1.1 million miles) of roads and highways, according to the country\u2019s National Transportation Confederation (CNT).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral Amazonian and Atlantic Forest primates \u2014 such as the spider monkey and the woolly monkey \u2014 would be unlikely to climb down from trees to cross a highway,\u201d Abra said. \u201cArtificial canopy bridges are a solution. They are simple, replicable, effective, and low-cost when compared to other measures, such as wildlife underpasses or <a href=\"https:\/\/brasil.mongabay.com\/2020\/10\/viadutos-para-animais-silvestres-comecam-a-ser-implantados-no-brasil\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\">vegetated overpasses<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other studies seek to follow the same course. One of them comes from the doctoral work of Ana Rubia Rossi, who holds a master\u2019s degree in ecology from the State University of Santa Cruz (UESC) in Brazil. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/396990705_A_beira_da_estrada_influencia_de_rodovia_sobre_mamiferos_em_regiao_agroflorestal_de_cacau_no_sul_da_Bahia\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\">Published in October 2022<\/a> and developed under Abra\u2019s guidance, the research has since helped save the lives of endemic and threatened primates in Ilh\u00e9us, a region in the southern part of Brazil\u2019s northeastern Bahia state.<\/p>\n<p>The study was conducted on the state highway BA-262, dubbed the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/agenciabrasil.ebc.com.br\/radioagencia-nacional\/geral\/audio\/2023-04\/estrada-do-chocolate-e-o-primeiro-roteiro-turistico-tematico-da-bahia\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\">Chocolate Road<\/a>\u201d as it\u2019s located in a cacao-growing area. In this region, fieldwork has created a census of sound and visual records, enabling the monitoring and installation of canopy bridges for endemic species such as Wied\u2019s marmoset (Callithrix kuhlii) and the golden-headed lion tamarin (Leontopithecus chrysomelas).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-194962 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/L.cry-BA-262-e1772648547273.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"910\"\/>A golden-headed lion tamarin spotted in the region of Ilh\u00e9us, Bahia state. Image courtesy of Ana R\u00fabia Rossi.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, Rossi identified more than 50 natural canopy connection points along a 48-km (30-mi) stretch of the BA-262, in a preserved part of the Atlantic Forest relying on the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2021\/02\/agroforestry-and-land-reform-give-brazil-cacao-farmers-sweet-taste-of-success\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">environmental management of agroforestry systems<\/a>, such as cabrucas, in which farmers plant cacao trees and other crops without clearing native forest. In this section of the biome, records of arboreal animals being run over are low.<\/p>\n<p>But this might change soon. The highway is increasingly becoming one of the main access routes to a new port under construction in the Ilh\u00e9us region, which has led to changes in the road layout and the remodeling of the structure of power lines running alongside it.<\/p>\n<p>Experts say the consequences are already noticeable, making the installation of new structures urgent. \u201cI was waiting for funding for new bridges when I saw two male lion tamarins run over on consecutive days,\u201d Rossi said. \u201cIt was when I thought: I can\u2019t wait any longer, I need to do something now, even with limited resources. So, we installed ropes on chains, connecting the trees directly in six locations where we were watching the animals die.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To her surprise and relief, just 11 days after adopting the temporary measure, it was already possible to observe primates using the bridges. \u201cIt was a record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy work needs social support,\u201d Rossi added. \u201cAnd the bureaucracy to approve the installation of fixed structures on the highway is the most difficult [part]. Since I know the routes of arboreal animals, the idea of using ropes connecting one tree to another was a great insight \u2014 and a quicker measure.
