(iStock)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Despite the softer January spending figures, we think another rate hike is on the cards for May,&#8221; McAulay said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This will see spending patterns diverge between outright homeowners on the one hand, and mortgage holders and renters on the other, resulting in steady but unremarkable spending growth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>McAulay said the &#8220;increased chatter&#8221; of another interest rate hike has led to a 0.1 per cent drop in discretionary spending.<\/p>\n<p>January&#8217;s spending growth was skewed towards essentials,\ufeff such as medical visits and car services.<\/p>\n<p>Economists have also warned that a March rate rise is &#8220;highly likely&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/acb5b0ad-2949-424d-8482-dbb1af5358b6.png\"   alt=\"Shoppers at Pitt Street Mall in Sydney.\"\/>Modest yet positive economic growth was reported in yesterday&#8217;s quarterly figure.
