While it&#8217;s true to a degree, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/dr-amir-khan-weight-loss-tips\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/dr-amir-khan-weight-loss-tips\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/dr-amir-khan-weight-loss-tips\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">losing weight in menopause<\/a> isn&#8217;t about eating less, but rather eating differently.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to fitness coach Loretta Hogg, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.drstacysims.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.drstacysims.com\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dr Stacy Sims<\/a> says: \u201cOne of the first things that women often do, because we grew up in an era of calories in, calories out, less calories means fat loss. That is not true because if you are not eating enough, your body holds on to fat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"5c419e51-ac66-4e7e-8cad-54787dde1fb9-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">This is called the &#8216;starvation response&#8217;, and it&#8217;s the body&#8217;s way of protecting itself when food is restricted. Metabolism slows down, hunger hormones increase, and fat stores are preserved for survival.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Staying adequately fuelled&#8221; and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/strength-training-for-women\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/strength-training-for-women\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/strength-training-for-women\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">strength training<\/a> regularly is what&#8217;s actually needed to lose weight while managing our hormone levels in menopause. \u201cWhen we\u2019re looking at how we\u2019re going to budge some of the meno-pot, we really want to focus on getting strong and building that muscle because if we are working on muscle and our whole focus is muscle and bone, then we end up eating accordingly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"480583dc-b042-4521-9450-120cca72d6f3\">Fibre and protein are the food groups to focus on, she says. They are filling, aid muscle growth (and so help maintain a healthy metabolism), help reduce food cravings, and provide us with the key nutrients our body needs when oestrogen levels fall.<\/p>\n<p>We know there\u2019s a huge market for <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/best-protein-powders-for-women\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/best-protein-powders-for-women\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/best-protein-powders-for-women\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">protein powders<\/a>, bars and other supplements, but actually, most of us can get what we need from eating <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/high-protein-foods-to-keep-you-full-for-longer\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/high-protein-foods-to-keep-you-full-for-longer\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/high-protein-foods-to-keep-you-full-for-longer\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">high-protein foods<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/diet\/how-much-protein-do-i-need-in-menopause\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/diet\/how-much-protein-do-i-need-in-menopause\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/diet\/how-much-protein-do-i-need-in-menopause\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">amount of protein you need in menopause<\/a> depends on your weight. &#8220;The recommended protein intake for women over 45 is approximately 1 to 1.5g of protein per kilogram of body weight per day, which is higher than the general recommendation for younger adults,&#8221; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/pauseandcohealthcare.com\/about-me\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/pauseandcohealthcare.com\/about-me\/\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dr Nadira Awal<\/a>, a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.doctify.com\/uk\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.doctify.com\/uk\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Doctify<\/a>-rated GP who specialises in women&#8217;s health and menopause, previously told woman&amp;home. We want to gain bone, we want to gain muscle. We want to fuel for that, so then the body fat comes off,\u201d she tells Loretta.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Sims says the best way for us to gain this muscle and bone growth is through strength training. \u201cWe need to focus on heavy lifting,\u201d she explains in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DVCCoMzkUVu\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DVCCoMzkUVu\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">another video on her Instagram<\/a> account. \u201cThe caveat here is that most <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-and-wellbeing\/surprising-symptoms-of-the-perimenopause-124654\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-and-wellbeing\/surprising-symptoms-of-the-perimenopause-124654\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-and-wellbeing\/surprising-symptoms-of-the-perimenopause-124654\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">perimenopausal <\/a>women haven\u2019t had a long history in strength training, and it\u2019s a learned skill.\u201d She says consistency is key, and starting off small, even just focusing on movement without weights, before you start adding some load. \u201cBut the goal is to get into heavy resistance training, where we have low reps with a heavy weight,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Sims says it\u2019s \u201cabsolutely safe\u201d for women to lift heavy during perimenopause and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-and-wellbeing\/menopause-symptoms-256048\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-and-wellbeing\/menopause-symptoms-256048\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-and-wellbeing\/menopause-symptoms-256048\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">menopause<\/a> &#8211; and it\u2019s something we should all be doing. She is keen to emphasise that it\u2019s never too late to start, and that \u201cwhat matters is your form and your function\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re new to lifting weights, try a simple <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/dumbbell-workout-at-home\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/dumbbell-workout-at-home\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.womanandhome.com\/health-wellbeing\/fitness\/dumbbell-workout-at-home\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dumbbell workout at home<\/a> and work your way up from there. If you have the means, consult a personal trainer for guidance on developing a workout plan.<\/p>\n<p>Sleep is another lifestyle aspect that <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DVONWkGEm_J\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DVONWkGEm_J\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dr Sims says<\/a> says may affect how you lose weight. She says poor sleep \u201ccreates metabolic disturbance and dysfunction and increases fat gain\u201d. Improving our sleep quality can lead to body composition improvements in as little as two to three weeks.
