Everyday subjects &#8211; red berries in a garden, the whirling blades of a mower, his grandson&#8217;s toys &#8211; were translated into his distinctively exuberant semi-abstraction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/4OU0J5O_copyright_image_73246.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"656\" alt=\"The artwork Northern Lights by Philip Trusttum, which is installed at 44 The Terrace in Wellington.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nThe artwork Northern Lights by Philip Trusttum, which is installed at 44 The Terrace in Wellington.<br \/>\nPhoto: Supplied\n<\/p>\n<p>Born in Raetihi on 9 June, 1940, Trusttum studied at the University of Canterbury&#8217;s School of Fine Arts, before going on to exhibit his works in Aotearoa, Australia, Europe and the United States.<\/p>\n<p>He was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/444174\/queen-s-birthday-honours-list-announced-for-2021\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">for services to art<\/a> in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;His acclaimed and prolific practice was grounded in the daily studio sessions he remained dedicated to even in his later years &#8230; his works are represented in all of the major public, and many private, collections in this country,&#8221; the gallery said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Philip Trusttum will be remembered as one of our finest painters, a passionate supporter of art and artists and a great friend to the Gallery.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/4OF0EIW_image_crop_32227.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"787\" alt=\"de Castro-Robinson - a zigzagged gaze Image 1: &#13;&#10;Philip Trusttum: Il Vecchio Castello\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nde Castro-Robinson &#8211; a zigzagged gaze Image 1: &#13;<br \/>\nPhilip Trusttum: Il Vecchio Castello<br \/>\nPhoto: Collection of the Wallace Arts Trust\n<\/p>\n<p>The New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te P\u016bkenga Whakaata also acknowledged Trusttum&#8217;s death.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He leaves behind a prolific body of work and is a significant loss for the arts community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>PG gallery192, in Christchurch, said it had been a privilege to share his practice with audiences over the years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As one of Aotearoa&#8217;s most significant contemporary painters, Philip brought extraordinary energy and wholehearted commitment to his work.
