{"id":316081,"date":"2026-03-06T14:14:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-06T14:14:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/316081\/"},"modified":"2026-03-06T14:14:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-06T14:14:13","slug":"us-shed-92000-jobs-unemployment-ticked-up-to-4-4-in-february","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/316081\/","title":{"rendered":"US shed 92,000 jobs, unemployment ticked up to 4.4% in February"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">The U.S. economy\u00a0shed\u00a092,000\u00a0jobs\u00a0in February,\u00a0the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated\u00a0March 6,\u00a0falling far short of forecasters&#8217; expectations, and signaling the\u00a0overall\u00a0labor market is\u00a0still in low-hire mode as employers navigate tariff-related inflation pressures,\u00a0AI adoption,\u00a0and geopolitical uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">The\u00a0February estimate\u00a0comes in\u00a0much\u00a0lower\u00a0than the BLS\u2019\u00a0now-revised\u00a0gain\u00a0of\u00a0126,000\u00a0jobs added in January, which was\u00a0much higher\u00a0than the agency\u2019s revised figures for 2025, when U.S. employers added only 181,000 jobs throughout the entire year, or about 15,000 a month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Over the past year,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/us-economic-growth-slows-sharply-145940097.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:economic output\u00a0has continued to grow;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">economic output\u00a0has continued to grow<\/a>\u00a0as job gains\u00a0have slowed, implying higher productivity per worker. Thrivent Chief Financial and Investment Officer David Royal said AI may be contributing\u00a0to\u00a0productivity\u00a0gains, but\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0still too early to attribute\u00a0the entire divergence between GDP and employment to AI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">\u201cI don\u2019t think companies really know the impact of AI on employment either,\u201d Royal told USA TODAY. \u201cThey\u2019re not ready to let people go, but they don\u2019t want to hire a bunch of people\u00a0because they\u2019re not sure they\u2019re going to need them, and I think that\u2019s what\u2019s driving the low-hire, low-fire environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">The unemployment rate\u00a0rose\u00a0to\u00a04.4%\u00a0in February,\u00a0up\u00a0from 4.3% in January, and\u00a0up\u00a0from\u00a04.1%\u00a0a year ago.\u00a0Bankrate Senior Economic\u00a0Analyst Mark Hamrick noted\u00a0ahead of the report that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2026\/01\/14\/immigration-numbers-net-migration-negative-study-trump\/88175499007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:less immigration;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">less immigration<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2021\/10\/26\/these-jobs-have-oldest-workforce-country\/6166671001\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:an aging workforce;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">an aging workforce<\/a>\u00a0mean fewer new jobs are needed to keep the rate steady.<\/p>\n<p>    <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1c59d3056f95e5c46c3d80ab58fe852b.jpeg\" alt=\"A &quot;Now Hiring&quot; sign is reflected through the window of Intuition Career staffing agency in Greenville, Alabama, U.S., December 4, 2022. Here&#8217;s what&#8217;s happening<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Health care, typically a steady engine of job growth, lost 28,000 jobs\u00a0in February.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0down\u00a0from a\u00a0revised\u00a0gain\u00a0of\u00a077,000\u00a0in January, though the dip can\u00a0primarily\u00a0be\u00a0explained\u00a0by a major strike of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ces\/publications\/strike-report.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Kaiser Permanente workers;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Kaiser Permanente workers<\/a>\u00a0during\u00a0the BLS\u2019 survey\u00a0period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Employment in the information sector also trended down in February, shedding 11,000 jobs.\u00a0The federal government\u00a0cut\u00a0another\u00a010,000\u00a0jobs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">The social\u00a0assistance\u00a0sector\u00a0was one of the few bright spots, adding 9,000 jobs in February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Employment in other industries, including\u00a0construction,\u00a0manufacturing, and\u00a0trade,\u00a0was little changed\u00a0over the month, the BLS said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Average hourly earnings for all employees on private, nonfarm payrolls rose by\u00a00.4%, to $37.32in February, the BLS said, adding that over the last year, average hourly earnings have increased\u00a03.8%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">But,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/does-u-k-shaped-economy-100244392.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:the K-shaped economy;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the K-shaped economy<\/a>\u00a0is showing up in\u00a0wage gains, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">While higher-income wage growth rose to 4.2% over the year in February, middle-income wage growth slowed to 1.2%, and lower-income wage growth slowed to 0.6%,\u00a0over the same period,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/institute.bankofamerica.com\/economic-insights\/monthly-employment-report-february-2026.html?utm_source=Email_Institute&amp;utm_medium=Email&amp;utm_campaign=Media_employment_March_26&amp;utm_content=030426_n_04_economic-insights\/monthly-employment-report-february-2026.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:according to a Bank of America Institute report;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">according to a Bank of America Institute report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">One reason wage gains are cooling for those workers\u00a0may be that switching jobs now\u00a0doesn\u2019t come with the same salary bump it used to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/great-resignation-over-not-quite-092542996.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:during \u201cthe\u00a0Great\u00a0Resignation.\u201d;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">during \u201cthe\u00a0Great\u00a0Resignation.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0People who changed jobs in January saw raises that were less than half of what job switchers were getting in 2019, according to Bank of America internal data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">A March 5\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.challengergray.com\/blog\/challenger-report-february-cuts-plunge-hiring-falls-56-percent\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Challenger, Gray &amp; By then,\u00a0the committee is expected to have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/kevin-warsh-know-trumps-next-184235700.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:a new chair;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a new chair<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">As of March 6,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmegroup.com\/markets\/interest-rates\/cme-fedwatch-tool.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:forecasters predict;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">forecasters predict<\/a>\u00a0the FOMC will continue to\u00a0hold the rate steady at a range of 3.5% to 3.75%\u00a0at its next two-day meeting on March 17 and 18.\u00a0Before then, committee members will review the February employment numbers and the BLS\u2019 Consumer Price Index report due out March 11.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">\u201cThey\u2019re\u00a0going to be more focused on\u00a0probably the\u00a0inflation data than the employment data.
