\n\t\u201cMelania<\/a>,\u201d documentary that follows the first lady in the 20 days leading up to Donald Trump\u2019s second presidential inauguration, will begin streaming on Amazon Prime Video<\/a> on March 9.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film was directed by Brett Ratner, who was best known for directing the first three \u201cRush Hour\u201d films before being accused of rape and other sexual misconduct by multiple people in 2017. \u201cMelania\u201d is his first project as a director since the allegations, which drove much of the entertainment industry to cut ties with him.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Trump family got a much-publicized payday when Amazon MGM Studios<\/a> bought the rights to \u201cMelania\u201d for $75 million dollars. Though the documentary lost money in theaters, its box office performance was still stronger than expected, debuting with $7 million<\/a> in its opening weekend and going on to make $16.6 million. Older white women made up its primary audience<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMelania\u201d was poorly reviewed, scoring an 11% among critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Variety\u2018s review<\/a> called the film a \u201ccheeseball infomercial of staggering inertia\u201d: \u201c\u2018Melania\u2019 is a documentary that never comes to life,\u201d wrote chief film critic Owen Gleiberman. \u201cIt\u2019s a \u2018portrait\u2019 of the First Lady of the United States, but it\u2019s so orchestrated and airbrushed and stage-managed that it barely rises to the level of a shameless infomercial. Is it cheesy? At moments, but mostly it\u2019s inert. It feels like it\u2019s been stitched together out of the most innocuous outtakes from a reality show. There\u2019s no drama to it. It should have been called \u2018Day of the Living Tradwife.’\u201d<\/p>\n
