\u201cI can confirm I have put my name forward but [am] unable to talk about the process,\u201d Howe told the Herald.<\/p>\n
Leoni too said she is interested in standing for Labour but will not discuss it until the selection process has been completed.<\/p>\n
If successful in gaining the nomination, it will be the second General Election campaign Leoni has fought.<\/p>\n

When Leoni lost out in the 2025 race to become Auckland mayor<\/a>, she won 77,537 votes to Wayne Brown\u2019s 180,130.<\/p>\n Labour\u2019s search for a new candidate in T\u0101maki comes after four-term Labour MP Peeni Henare<\/a> announced he was stepping away from politics.<\/p>\n Labour\u2019s M\u0101ori caucus chair Willie Jackson told the Herald Labour would run excellent candidates in the seven M\u0101ori electorates and the election would be a great opportunity for Labour to win back a number of M\u0101ori electorates.<\/p>\n Te P\u0101ti M\u0101ori holds six of the seven M\u0101ori electorates<\/a> but infighting last year with its Te Tai Tokerau and Te Tai Tonga<\/a> MPs could potentially cost it seats.<\/p>\n Cushla Tangaere-Manuel is Labour\u2019s sole MP from a M\u0101ori electorate, with the former provincial rugby boss securing the Ikaroa-R\u0101whiti seat at the 2023 General Election.<\/p>\n \u201cWe will have strong candidates in all of the seven M\u0101ori electorates, with a fresh faces and well-known M\u0101ori candidates,\u201d Jackson said.<\/p>\n \u201cI can\u2019t get into who those candidates are until we have been through the internal candidacy nomination process.\u201d<\/p>\n Joseph Los\u2019e joined NZME in 2022 as kaupapa M\u0101ori editor.
