{"id":318190,"date":"2026-03-07T21:05:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-07T21:05:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/318190\/"},"modified":"2026-03-07T21:05:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-07T21:05:08","slug":"maketu-pies-the-bay-of-plenty-brand-wanting-a-second-chance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/318190\/","title":{"rendered":"Maket\u016b Pies: The Bay of Plenty brand wanting a second chance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">The \u201cplanets aligned\u201d, and Williams was brought in to lead the brand\u2019s rebuild.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Maket\u016b Pies began in 1982 when a local grandmother began making pies in her kitchen and handing them out through her window, Williams said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">They proved so popular the next generation set up a small shop attached to the house.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">The family then expanded the original home by adding new rooms, extensions and production spaces as demand grew.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">That same house is still at the centre of operations, forming what Williams described as a \u201crabbit warren\u201d of production rooms, chillers and ovens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">The brand soon expanded across NZ, becoming one of the country\u2019s most recognisable pie names in the 1990s and early 2000s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">For locals, Maket\u016b Pies became a point of pride &#8211; something from their backyard that made it big.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"The Maket\u016b Pies factory, where the iconic Bay of Plenty brand began and still operates today. Photo \/ George Novak. <\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Williams said the reduced product range of 13 pies, from its height of 40, meant fewer staff were needed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">He is no stranger to the food industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">The 52-year-old spent most of his working life in food and hospitality, starting as a teenager at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/lifestyle\/bye-bye-georgie-pie-how-you-can-buy-new-zealands-last-ever-batch\/K7HGKVVXLVQTG5KHBWMHCPL3AU\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/lifestyle\/bye-bye-georgie-pie-how-you-can-buy-new-zealands-last-ever-batch\/K7HGKVVXLVQTG5KHBWMHCPL3AU\/\">Georgie Pie<\/a> before studying business and moving into senior management roles, including running high-end supermarket chain Farro Fresh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">He described pies as a core part of NZ\u2019s food culture and something people took seriously.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Kiwis were happy to spend about $15 on a burger or sushi, but expectations were much higher when spending \u201cfive or six bucks on a pie\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt\u2019s a tradie\u2019s lunch, it\u2019s a family meal &#8230; it\u2019s important to people,\u201d he said &#8211; and people go looking for a good pie. <\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\" Maket\u016b Pies general manager Craig Williams is leading the brand\u2019s push to get its pies back into dairy and service station warmers. Photo \/ Annabel Reid<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Before taking on the Maket\u016b role, Williams had been considering semi-retirement and even explored opportunities overseas, including working in Antarctica and running a business in Vanuatu.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Since taking over, Montana Group focused on fixing the foundations of the business before pushing for growth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">The company returned to the pies\u2019 original handmade pastry recipe, which used higher-quality ingredients. <\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">It had invested in repairing and upgrading equipment at the Maket\u016b factory, tightening food safety systems and reducing the range to focus on consistency and quality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe didn\u2019t want to go out too early and still be delivering a product that might not have been great,\u201d Williams said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe wanted to get it right first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">He saw Maket\u016b Pies as something that belonged to the community as much as the company, and something he was meant to be a part of.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">The focus was on steady growth and rebuilding relationships with New Zealanders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt\u2019s about going back to the foundation of the business,\u201d Williams said.<\/p>\n<p>Crowded market, limited warmer space<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Williams said the pie market could appear \u201cpretty saturated\u201d from the outside, but he believed there was still a gap for Maket\u016b Pies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Its industry data suggested about 80 million pies were sold in NZ each year, with the country ranking among the highest per-capita savoury pie consumers in the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">He estimated Maket\u016b Pies was operating alongside about 20 other pie brands nationally in a similar \u201cmainstream, good-quality\u201d segment &#8211; not budget pies, but not gourmet either.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">He didn\u2019t view those brands as rivals to \u201cknock over\u201d, and said Maket\u016b Pies didn\u2019t need to be everywhere to succeed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe only need to be in 10% of them to make it work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\" Pies on the production line at the Maket\u016b Pies factory. Photo \/ Supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Williams said retailers had generally been receptive, with particularly good responses from the Bay of Plenty and Waikato.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Many in those regions had dealt with the brand before, held \u201cgood memories\u201d of the pies and had noticed they were \u201cmissing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Some were open to stocking more uncommon parts of the Maket\u016b Pies range, such as its fish or mussel pie. <\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Williams said he was \u201cvery confident\u201d the brand could return to its former standing and believed people\u2019s faith in Maket\u016b Pies was still there.<\/p>\n<p>A worker who\u2019s seen the highs and lows<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Production and scheduling manager Nina Kingham has worked at Maket\u016b Pies for 15 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">The Te Puke local joined the business straight out of high school in 2010, starting in the packing room.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Kingham said there were \u201cbugger all\u201d opposition pie brands at the time and Maket\u016b Pies were \u201ceverywhere\u201d, stocked in \u201call the supermarkets\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe were real busy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Many families had multiple generations working there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWhen I had first started there, it was locals &#8230; so many different lots of families\u201d, Kingham said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Kingham said Maket\u016b Pies began \u201cslowly going downhill\u201d about three years into her job.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cEverything was getting smaller\u201d, with reduced hours and declining output. <\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Then-owners <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/bay-of-plenty-times\/news\/end-of-an-era-for-maketu-pies-former-employees-react-to-new-owners\/QNBXUPHJ5YQDC3GVXP4IGJV4QI\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/bay-of-plenty-times\/news\/end-of-an-era-for-maketu-pies-former-employees-react-to-new-owners\/QNBXUPHJ5YQDC3GVXP4IGJV4QI\/\">Grant and Karen Wilson<\/a> sold Maket\u016b Pies, their business of 36 years, in 2019. The company was described as being in a \u201ccritical financial position\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">When Te Arawa Management took over, Kingham said it was \u201dhard for them&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">She described that period as stressful, with the \u201cunknown\u201d weighing heavily on staff who relied on the factory as their main source of income.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">At its peak, the business employed about 40 staff, who were proud to tell people where they worked. Maket\u016b Pies now employs about 25 people, with at least half based in the town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Kingham said there was a \u201csense of hope\u201d when the Montana Group took over. Photo \/ Supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Kingham said Williams came into the role with fresh ideas, and he was a \u201cgo-getter\u201d who \u201cliked to achieve things\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">He was getting the brand \u201cback to what it was\u201d and was \u201cpushing for our name\u201d, Kingham said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">She could see the progress through \u201ca lot more sales\u201d and outside \u201ccompliments\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">She said Maket\u016b Pies wasn\u2019t back to what it was when she started yet, but it was \u201chalfway there\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Brand expert on rebuilding a food brand<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Glenn Dougal said going through liquidation did not necessarily amount to reputational failure for an everyday food brand like Maket\u016b Pies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Dougal is the director at Wave Agency, a full-service marketing agency based in the Bay of Plenty, working with clients across NZ.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">He said most consumers did not make purchasing decisions based on a company\u2019s financial position, but on hunger, familiarity and whether they trusted what they would get when they ate the pie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Strong quality was often enough for consumers to be \u201cvery forgiving\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Reputation in food retail was rebuilt daily through taste, freshness and consistency, and could not be salvaged through rebranding alone if the product failed to deliver.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">He said pies were typically a quick, instinctive purchase made in front of a dairy or service station pie warmer, where familiar and trustworthy brands tended to win.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Wave Agency director Glenn Dougal provides marketing insight on brand recovery. Photo \/ Supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">A strong local heritage could help draw customers back, but Dougal said nostalgia alone was not enough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cPie eaters want reassurance the brand still belongs in their world now, not just in memory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">Although he did not have specific data on the current competitive landscape, Dougal said it was reasonable to assume Maket\u016b Pies was operating in a highly competitive retail environment, with consumers making choices based on taste, quality and price.<\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\">He said the strongest brand recoveries tended to be steady rather than dramatic, built around consistently delivering \u201cthe best pie in the warmer\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"QOlBexkCgF\" style=\"display:none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/author\/annabel-reid\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Annabel Reid<\/a> is a multimedia journalist for the Bay of Plenty Times and Rotorua Daily Post, based in Rotorua.
