For the best part of two decades, The Kyle and Jackie O Show was not just Australia\u2019s most successful FM breakfast show, but set a global standard.<\/p>\n
You could like or hate (and many did) Kyle Sandilands but you\u2019d have to recognise his mastery of the craft of radio. It was such a sad way for the show to end, without a proper goodbye to its many listeners.<\/p>\n
Then there\u2019s the business side of it. The Kyle and Jackie O Show brought about the downfall of 2Day FM and the rise of Kiis FM.<\/p>\n
With the ten-year deal, the show\u2019s failure to find an audience beyond Sydney has become an anchor on ARN Media\u2019s finances. That $20m-per-year obligation is the most painful part of the company\u2019s $189m annual operating costs.<\/p>\n

And there was another ASX announcement on Friday night. Dow Jones Indices has kicked ARN Media off the ASX All Ordinaries. With a market capitalisation of just $111m, ARN is no longer among the country\u2019s biggest 500 stocks. Meanwhile, rival Southern Cross Austereo was readmitted. Ouch.<\/p>\n
But a more significant statement came from outside the ASX. On Friday night came the first words from Jackie Henderson. And suddenly it felt like we knew less than we did before.<\/p>\n
Since the story kicked off, The Daily Mail has been full of people \u201cbreaking their silence\u201d while saying nothing. The presenters being doorstepped and saying that they couldn\u2019t actually comment counted as breaking their silence. So did former show newsreader Geoff Field publishing a social media post to say he wouldn\u2019t be talking about it. Hell, even Beau Ryan and Adam Ferrier broke their silences to say they were not contenders to replace Kyle.<\/p>\n
Friday night\u2019s contribution from Jackie Henderson took things in a new direction.<\/p>\n
It came in a statement on her behalf from her manager and friend Gemma O\u2019Neill. (For those who don\u2019t follow the industry closely, just one slightly confusing coincidence is that Jackie Henderson\u2019s professional name of Jackie O comes from when she was married to \u201cUgly\u201d Phil O\u2019Neil. Gemma O\u2019Neill, meanwhile, made her name behind the scenes in the radio industry as Gemma Fordham but is now known professionally as Gemma O\u2019Neill. O\u2019Neill and O\u2019Neil. Two different spellings.)<\/p>\n
For the last three days, the prevailing narrative had put Henderson in the same camp as ARN, united against Sandilands. That was the impression given in ARN\u2019s carefully worded statement to the ASX. It looked like quite the betrayal of her former co-host, even if they had grown apart.<\/p>\n
After last night\u2019s update, things now look even more complicated. It would appear that ARN blindsided not just Kyle, but Jackie too.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s worth carefully reading the statements from both parties.<\/p>\n
First, the ARN announcement:<\/p>\n
\u201cMs Jacqueline Henderson has given notice that she \u2018cannot continue to work with Mr Kyle Sandilands.\u2019 Accordingly, ARN has terminated the services agreement with Henderson Media Pty Ltd, under which Ms Henderson presents the Kyle and Jackie O show. Ms Henderson will cease to present the Kyle and Jackie O show. ARN has also offered to Ms Henderson the possibility of an alternative show on the ARN network.<\/p>\n
\u201cARN has also provided written notice to Mr Kyle Sandilands and Quasar Media Services Pty Ltd (Quasar Media) stating that it considers that Mr Sandilands\u2019 behaviour during the show on 20 February 2026 is an act of serious misconduct which is in breach of ARN\u2019s services agreement with Quasar Media, under which Mr Sandilands presents the Kyle and Jackie O show. Mr Sandilands has been given 14 days to remedy this breach. If it is not remedied, ARN will terminate the services agreement with Quasar Media, and in that event Mr Sandilands will cease to present the Kyle and Jackie O show. During the 14 day period, Mr Sandilands will not take part in the show.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe KIIS breakfast show will be taken off-air effective immediately, with interim arrangements made for the show.\u201d<\/p>\n
Many people, myself included, interpreted that as Jackie having formally told ARN she couldn\u2019t work with Kyle and asking to be released from her contract.<\/p>\n
Now look at the statement from the Jackie O camp:<\/p>\n
\u201cI am deeply saddened by the events of the past week and the possibility of the show ending. This has come as a shock to me, as it has to everyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOver the past few days, there has been a lot of speculation and misinformation about my departure from the show. I want to make one important point very clear: I did not quit or resign.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe current media narrative does not reflect what actually occurred, and it has been truly heartbreaking to see how this has unfolded. At this stage, I am unable to say anything further, as I am addressing this through the appropriate legal channels.\u201d<\/p>\n
It\u2019s possible that both of the above statements are true.<\/p>\n
What now seems most likely is that Henderson formally told ARN she could no longer work with Kyle, but that she wanted to continue to do the show without him. As ARN might see it, she wanted to have her cake and eat it.<\/p>\n
A clue in ARN\u2019s statement is in the words they have attributed directly to Henderson in quote marks \u2013 \u201ccannot continue to work with Mr Kyle Sandilands\u201d. The fact that ARN says she used those specific words suggests it was a formal communication from her, or her team. Otherwise she would have said \u201cKyle\u201d, not \u201cMr Sandilands\u201d. And the fact ARN publicly shared the quote is because they think it is important to any forthcoming legal case.<\/p>\n
Following that logic, it seems most likely that ARN, having contracted for The Kyle and Jackie O Show, not The Jackie O Show, used this as a reason to terminate her contract, in a move which came as a shock to Jackie, too.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s becoming an episode of Survivor. Jackie blindsided Kyle. And ARN blindsided both of them.<\/p>\n
The lawyers are going to make millions.<\/p>\n
