Almost one million by other animals, and more than half a million from direct conflict among ourselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-block__text col-start-5 span-cols-6 col-md-start-3 span-md-cols-10 span-sm-cols-12 col-sm-start-2\">Almost all of these deaths from other animals are caused by just two types: mosquitoes and snakes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-block__text col-start-5 span-cols-6 col-md-start-3 span-md-cols-10 span-sm-cols-12 col-sm-start-2\">In the chart below, we\u2019ve brought together estimates of the number of people killed by different animals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-block__text col-start-5 span-cols-6 col-md-start-3 span-md-cols-10 span-sm-cols-12 col-sm-start-2\">These numbers are estimates, and some come with significant uncertainty. That\u2019s why we\u2019ve published a <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.owid.io\/projects\/etl\/analyses\/deadliest_animals\/\" class=\"span-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">detailed methodology<\/a> explaining our sources and how they compare. They have been one of our biggest threats <a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/malaria-past-prevalence\" class=\"span-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">for millennia<\/a>, and still kill approximately 760,000 people every year.<a href=\"#note-2\" class=\"ref\">2<\/a> Over 80% of those deaths are the result of <a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/malaria\" class=\"span-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">malaria<\/a>, which is transmitted and spread by the Anopheles mosquito. Malaria still kills close to <a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/grapher\/child-deaths-from-malaria-number?tab=line\" class=\"span-link span-linked-chart\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">half a million children<\/a> every year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-block__text col-start-5 span-cols-6 col-md-start-3 span-md-cols-10 span-sm-cols-12 col-sm-start-2\">Another 100,000 people die every year from other mosquito-borne diseases, including dengue fever and yellow fever (spread by the mosquito species Aedes aegypti) and Japanese encephalitis.<\/p>\n<p>Almost all deaths from other animals are caused by just two types: mosquitoes and snakes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-block__text col-start-5 span-cols-6 col-md-start-3 span-md-cols-10 span-sm-cols-12 col-sm-start-2\">Snakes are one of the most common phobias, and you can see why. They are the second largest killers. The death toll from venomous snakes is surprisingly uncertain, as many of these deaths occur in rural areas where death records are often poor.<a href=\"#note-3\" class=\"ref\">3<\/a> But the figure is likely to be around 100,000 deaths per year. That means snakes kill more than all animals below them on the list combined.<a href=\"#note-4\" class=\"ref\">4<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article-block__text col-start-5 span-cols-6 col-md-start-3 span-md-cols-10 span-sm-cols-12 col-sm-start-2\">Most of those remaining deaths are caused by dogs, the animals that humans have grown to love as domesticated pets. The majority are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/rabies\" class=\"span-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">due to rabies<\/a>, rather than direct wounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-block__text col-start-5 span-cols-6 col-md-start-3 span-md-cols-10 span-sm-cols-12 col-sm-start-2\">Near the bottom of the list, we reach the animals that dominate our nightmares \u2014 sharks and wolves. They make for gripping headlines and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jaws_%28film%29\" class=\"span-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blockbuster films<\/a>. But in reality, shark and wolf attacks are very rare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-block__text col-start-5 span-cols-6 col-md-start-3 span-md-cols-10 span-sm-cols-12 col-sm-start-2\">Of course, they don\u2019t kill fewer people because they\u2019re less dangerous. We\u2019d rather be locked in a room with a mosquito than a lion. The real difference is exposure: it\u2019s much easier to avoid large predators than it is to avoid disease-carrying insects and parasites.<a href=\"#note-5\" class=\"ref\">5<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article-block__text col-start-5 span-cols-6 col-md-start-3 span-md-cols-10 span-sm-cols-12 col-sm-start-2\">The good news is that most deaths from animals \u2014 especially the largest killers \u2014 are preventable. We have <a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/grapher\/children-sleeping-under-treated-bednet\" class=\"span-link span-linked-chart\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bednets<\/a> and insecticide sprays to reduce exposure to mosquitoes, and medication to treat malaria if someone does become infected. New techniques, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/wolbachia-neglected-tropical-diseases\" class=\"span-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wolbachia method<\/a>, have been developed to stop the spread of dengue fever. Antivenoms can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(18)32745-4\/fulltext\" class=\"span-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">often save<\/a> someone from a potentially fatal snakebite.<a href=\"#note-6\" class=\"ref\">6<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article-block__text col-start-5 span-cols-6 col-md-start-3 span-md-cols-10 span-sm-cols-12 col-sm-start-2\">The problem is that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/snakebite-envenoming\" class=\"span-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">not everyone has access<\/a> to these preventive and treatment methods when they need them.<a href=\"#note-7\" class=\"ref\">7<\/a> If these small killers received the same global attention as large predators, more effort might go into stopping them. That is one reason why these comparisons are useful: as a reminder of what people are actually dying from, and where the most lives could be saved.<\/p>\n<p>There are other diseases \u2014 in particular, <a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/neglected-tropical-diseases\" class=\"span-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">neglected tropical diseases<\/a> \u2014 that could also be dramatically reduced with better access to treatment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-block__text col-start-5 span-cols-6 col-md-start-3 span-md-cols-10 span-sm-cols-12 col-sm-start-2\">In many regions, deaths from mosquitoes have decreased dramatically. Malaria was once prevalent in countries that are <a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/malaria-past-prevalence\" class=\"span-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">now free of it<\/a>.
