A man who allegedly caused a fatal crash in Port Chalmers has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter\u00a0and can now be named.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Morgan Caleb Morrell, 24, appeared before the High Court at Dunedin this morning, where counsel John Westgate said there were no\u00a0available grounds to argue\u00a0for the continuation of\u00a0name suppression.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The order, which was made at the defendant\u2019s first appearance,\u00a0thus\u00a0lapsed.\u00a0<\/p>\n
As well as the\u00a0alleged\u00a0manslaughter\u00a0of John Taylor, Morrell also denied counts of\u00a0dangerous\u00a0driving causing injury\u00a0to two others\u00a0and\u00a0one of\u00a0failing to stop\u00a0and\u00a0ascertain\u00a0injury after a crash.\u00a0<\/p>\n
On January 30, at 9pm, the defendant was allegedly driving\u00a0in Wickliffe Tce, Port Chalmers,\u00a0when\u00a0he\u00a0hit a power\u00a0pole.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
At the time a witness told the Otago Daily Times they had noticed the vehicle in the area and\u00a0after the incident, saw\u00a0someone “getting out of the car bleeding”.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
One\u00a0person\u00a0was lying unconscious in the street\u00a0and another was “desperately” trying to revive him,\u00a0the witness said. \u00a0<\/p>\n
