{"id":321582,"date":"2026-03-10T01:08:12","date_gmt":"2026-03-10T01:08:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/321582\/"},"modified":"2026-03-10T01:08:12","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T01:08:12","slug":"can-you-imagine-being-chased-by-an-apex-predator-tourists-watch-incredible-escape-in-antarctica","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/321582\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Can you imagine being chased by an apex predator?\u201d Tourists watch incredible escape in Antarctica"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wildlife watchers in Antarctica were amazed when a lone gentoo penguin managed to outsmart hunting orcas by racing and swerving away from them, dodging their approach.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you imagine being chased by an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/apex-predators-what-they-are\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">apex predator<\/a>?\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/polar-latitudes.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Polar Latitudes Expeditions<\/a>\u00a0when sharing the footage on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reels\/DUJmzzNE9nS\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the clip, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/marine-animals\/facts-about-orcas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">orcas<\/a> can be seen repeatedly approaching the little <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/birds\/facts-about-penguins\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">penguin<\/a>, which swims with all its might to get away.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even the crew and wildlife guides were excited to see such a special encounter. \u201cEveryone ran back and forth across the deck as the penguin and the whales surfaced on either side of the vessel,\u201d says marine mammal expert Jeannine McCormack, a member of the Polar Latitudes Expeditions team who was on the Antarctic voyage in January 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn five years of guiding in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/antarctic-animals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Antarctica<\/a>, I had never observed this behaviour, and it&#8217;s an experience I won&#8217;t soon forget,\u201d she says. \u201cI suspect many of us found ourselves rooting for predator and prey in equal measure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tourists witness rare footage of two orcas chasing a penguin. Credit: Polar Latitudes Expeditions<\/p>\n<p>Seeing this documentary-worthy battle unfold before their eyes was a reminder of how incredible nature can be. &#8220;The encounter highlighted both the penguin\u2019s remarkable swimming ability \u2013 astonishingly fast and agile underwater \u2013 and the intelligence of the orcas as they coordinated their movements and even used the hull of the ship to block the penguin\u2019s escape route,\u201d says McCormack.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She wonders whether the killer whales were in full hunting mode or just putting on a show, saying: &#8220;Of course, it is impossible to know whether the orcas were playing, practicing, or perhaps teaching a younger individual how to hunt but it really gave us an up-close look at the Antarctic food web in action.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Luckily for the gentoo penguin, the little bird was able to get away. \u201cThe penguin ducked and dodged and swam its little heart out and managed to evade the mighty orca,\u201d says Polar Latitudes Expeditions. \u201cWhat a spectacle!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The penguin escapes to freedom.
