(Supplied: Charles Sturt University)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s an inherited recessive gene,&#8221; Dr Znudersic said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She said leucism could be more common in the islands&#8217; echidna gene pools compared to mainland Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Feral cats versus native species<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Truwana\/Cape Barren Island is home to about 80 people, and has been managed entirely by the Aboriginal community since the state government handed the land back in 2005.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Colonisation drastically changed the ecosystem of the island, with feral cats a major threat to native animals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Almost every day, the truwana rangers head out in a ute armed with tins of sardines and metal cages to trap cats.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Brown said it was rewarding to see the effort pay off.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re catching 30-odd cats every winter \u2014 that&#8217;s making a big dent in the feral cat population,&#8221;  he said.<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A feral cat captured on a trail camera.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/d0516899b66bd3357c5841d6c2613d95.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Feral cats pose a huge threat to wildlife wherever they roam.
