Here&#8217;s what to expect as Earth&#8217;s natural satellite reaches its third quarter phase early on March 11, how to see it and what to look out for on its ancient surface.<\/p>\n<p>March&#8217;s third, or final quarter <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18880-moon-phases.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18880-moon-phases.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18880-moon-phases.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">moon phase<\/a> will occur at 5:39 a.m. EDT (0939 GMT), as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the moon<\/a> appears in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a>&#8216;s sky with its left half illuminated by direct sunlight and its right masked in shadow, close to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stars<\/a> of the constellation <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16947-scorpius-constellation.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16947-scorpius-constellation.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16947-scorpius-constellation.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Scorpius<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"64b64f7c-88d9-41a7-bd34-2b3ea4ab4143-2\">Viewers in the U.S. will find the half-lit moon shining low on the southern horizon at this time, with the red supergiant star <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21905-antares.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21905-antares.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21905-antares.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Antares<\/a> glowing roughly 10 degrees to its upper right \u2014 about the width of your clenched fist held at arm&#8217;s length to the sky.<\/p>\n<p>Article continues below <\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"c051d9c8-8d26-4ad2-8b91-e9dce0c48eec\">If you&#8217;re an early riser, then the nights surrounding the third quarter phase are a wonderful time to observe the sweeping expanse of Mare Imbrium (the Sea of Showers) \u2014 a 700 -mile-wide (1,127-kilometer-wide) impact site that dominates the upper-left region of the lunar disk (when viewed from the northern hemisphere).<\/p>\n<p>The dark expanse we see today is the remains of ancient lava flows that filled the basin in the wake of its creation almost 4 billion years ago, before hardening to renew a swathe of the lunar surface.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/VW9hueLzAfLJHtStmTUZEi.jpg\" alt=\"The upper section of the lunar disk is pictured during its third quarter phase with its left half lit and its right in shadow.\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/VW9hueLzAfLJHtStmTUZEi.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/VW9hueLzAfLJHtStmTUZEi.jpg\" class=\"inline expandable\"\/><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/VW9hueLzAfLJHtStmTUZEi.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"expand-button icon-expand-image icon\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/VW9hueLzAfLJHtStmTUZEi.jpg\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"><\/p>\n<p>The northwestern region of the lunar surface pictured during the third quarter phase. (Image credit: NASA Scientific Visualization Studio, annotations made by Anthony Wood in Canva.)<\/p>\n<p id=\"54c3ed76-6f24-4477-b505-115f01e360a0\">Sweep a 6-inch telescope across the line separating night from dark \u2014 known as the terminator \u2014 slightly above the lunar equator to find the Montes Apennines mountain range curving from the shadowed to the sunlit side of the Earth&#8217;s satellite. The 370-mile-long (600 km) geographical feature forms the southeastern border of Mare Imbrium and will make for a gorgeous target in the early hours of March 11 as sunlight catches its west-facing peaks and slopes.<\/p>\n<p>By the early hours of March 12, the terminator will have swept past the Montes Apenninus, hiding them from view. The rocky formation creates a spectacular &#8220;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/a-golden-handle-will-appear-on-the-moon-tonight-heres-how-to-see-it\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/a-golden-handle-will-appear-on-the-moon-tonight-heres-how-to-see-it\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/a-golden-handle-will-appear-on-the-moon-tonight-heres-how-to-see-it\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Golden Handle<\/a>&#8221; effect 10-11 days after each new moon, as sunlight catches its upper peaks while leaving the surrounding terrain in shadow.<\/p>\n<p>Over the coming week, the sunlit region of the moon will become ever smaller, transforming from a half-sphere to a waning crescent, before finally disappearing altogether from our sight as it slips into the glare of our parent star on the nights surrounding its <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17561-new-moon-explained-lunar-phases.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17561-new-moon-explained-lunar-phases.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17561-new-moon-explained-lunar-phases.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new moon<\/a> phase on March 18.<\/p>\n<p>Want to explore the ever-changing face of the moon as it makes its 27-day journey around Earth?
