The light show likely meant that the space rock, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1TPO_ULrHQA\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1TPO_ULrHQA\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">caught on camera<\/a> by Europe&#8217;s AllSky7 fireball network, was &#8220;several meters&#8221; in diameter..<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"c0d3401e-4890-4274-8a46-749ba408902d-2\">More than 3,000 people \u2014 including eyewitnesses in France, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg and The Netherlands \u2014 reported the explosion to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/fireballs.imo.net\/members\/imo_view\/event\/2026\/1467?org=imo\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/fireballs.imo.net\/members\/imo_view\/event\/2026\/1467?org=imo\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">International Meteor Organization<\/a>. The local fire department told Bild that the rock that punched this hole ended up in a bedroom, which was unoccupied at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Another photo showed nine golf ball-size rocks in a brown paper bag. However, it is unclear if these were all of the fragments that were collected, and they are yet to be confirmed as true meteorites.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Get the world\u2019s most fascinating discoveries delivered straight to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>Fireball meteors occur when falling space rocks are superheated due to high levels of friction from the surrounding air, according to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/amsmeteors.org\/fireballs\/faqf\/#1\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/amsmeteors.org\/fireballs\/faqf\/#1\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">American Meteor Society<\/a>. This often causes the object to break apart, which creates a secondary bright flash (as seen in the latest video).<\/p>\n<p>Most of the resulting fragments burn up before they hit the ground or are so small that they are never found. And in 2022, a house in California <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/meteorite-possibly-burns-down-house\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/meteorite-possibly-burns-down-house\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/meteorite-possibly-burns-down-house\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">burned down after being hit<\/a> by a suspected fireball fragment \u2014 although it remains unclear if this was the true cause of the fire.<\/p>\n<p id=\"5a0fbd83-0e8a-4db5-99e9-5cf863cc1c7d\">A tiny space rock also <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/fireball-rare-meteorite-england.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/fireball-rare-meteorite-england.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/fireball-rare-meteorite-england.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">landed on and scorched a driveway<\/a> in southwest England in 2021 and was collected for analysis. A similar encounter was <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/doorbell-camera-captures-1st-ever-video-of-the-sound-and-sight-of-a-meteorite-crash-landing\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/doorbell-camera-captures-1st-ever-video-of-the-sound-and-sight-of-a-meteorite-crash-landing\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/doorbell-camera-captures-1st-ever-video-of-the-sound-and-sight-of-a-meteorite-crash-landing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">filmed on a doorbell camera<\/a> at a Canadian house in January 2025, which also captured the first-ever sound of a meteorite impact.<\/p>\n<p>And in 2023, a French woman is believed to have been <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/meteoroids\/woman-in-france-hit-by-suspected-meteorite-while-drinking-coffee-on-her-porch\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/meteoroids\/woman-in-france-hit-by-suspected-meteorite-while-drinking-coffee-on-her-porch\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/meteoroids\/woman-in-france-hit-by-suspected-meteorite-while-drinking-coffee-on-her-porch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">directly hit by a pebble-size meteorite<\/a> while drinking coffee on her front porch, without causing any real injury.
