(Image credit: NASA\/JHU-APL\/UMD)<\/p>\n<p id=\"d04be837-7ced-4e19-b042-c94386069df7\">The findings, described in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.3847\/PSJ\/ae3f27\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.3847\/PSJ\/ae3f27\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">paper<\/a> published March 6 in The Planetary Science Journal, come as another team of scientists confirmed DART not only altered Dimorphos&#8217; orbit around its companion asteroid but also slightly changed the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/asteroid-comet-missions\/nasas-asteroid-smashing-spacecraft-managed-to-alter-target-space-rocks-orbit-around-the-sun\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/asteroid-comet-missions\/nasas-asteroid-smashing-spacecraft-managed-to-alter-target-space-rocks-orbit-around-the-sun\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/asteroid-comet-missions\/nasas-asteroid-smashing-spacecraft-managed-to-alter-target-space-rocks-orbit-around-the-sun\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">entire binary system&#8217;s orbit<\/a> around the sun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>The shift in the system&#8217;s orbital speed was about 11.7 microns per second, or roughly 1.7 inches per hour, researchers reported in a different <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.aea4259\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.aea4259\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">paper<\/a> published March 6 in the journal Science Advances.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Over time, such a small change in an asteroid&#8217;s motion can make the difference between a hazardous object hitting or missing our planet,&#8221; Rahil Makadia, a planetary defense researcher at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, who led the Science Advances paper, said in a separate <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/nasas-dart-mission-changed-orbit-of-asteroid-didymos-around-sun\/?utm_source=iContact&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=1-nasajpl&amp;utm_content=media-dart20260306\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/nasas-dart-mission-changed-orbit-of-asteroid-didymos-around-sun\/?utm_source=iContact&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=1-nasajpl&amp;utm_content=media-dart20260306\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>About 15% of near-Earth asteroids are estimated to be binary systems, in which a smaller asteroid orbits a larger companion. These systems can host surprisingly complex processes, in part because sunlight can gradually speed up the rotation of small asteroids until loose material breaks free from their surfaces.<\/p>\n<p>            What to read next<\/p>\n<p>This phenomenon, known as the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rare-disintegrating-asteroid-hubble-photo.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rare-disintegrating-asteroid-hubble-photo.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rare-disintegrating-asteroid-hubble-photo.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">YORP effect<\/a>, occurs when an asteroid absorbs sunlight and re-emits that energy as thermal radiation, creating a tiny but continuous thrust that can slowly spin the space rock faster.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence of this process has been seen elsewhere in the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar system<\/a>. Observations by NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/lucy-asteroid-mission\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/lucy-asteroid-mission\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/lucy-asteroid-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lucy spacecraft<\/a>, for example, revealed <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-lucy-lpsc-dinkinesh-selam-asteroids\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-lucy-lpsc-dinkinesh-selam-asteroids\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-lucy-lpsc-dinkinesh-selam-asteroids\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ridges around the equators<\/a> of the asteroid Dinkinesh and its moon Selam \u2014 features scientists believe formed as material migrated and accumulated during such spin-ups. (Image credit: ASI\/NASA)<\/p>\n<p id=\"5e3f1b9b-ea27-4cfe-bb23-1dc6d208baaa\">In the new study, Sunshine and her team identified the fan-shaped streaks by developing sophisticated image-processing techniques to remove shadows cast by boulders and correct for uneven lighting across the surface, the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As we refined our 3D model of the moon, the fan-shaped streaks became clearer, not fainter,&#8221; study co-author Tony Farnham, a research scientist at the University of Maryland, said in the statement. &#8220;It confirmed to us that we were working with something real.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The team found that debris left Didymos at about 30.7 centimeters (12.1 inches) per second \u2014 so slowly that the impacts would create deposits rather than craters. The streaks are also clustered around the moon&#8217;s equator, matching models predicting where the material spun off from Didymos would most likely land, scientists say.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists are eager to see what the transformed Dimorphos now looks like up close. That opportunity may come as soon as this December, when the European Space Agency&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-esa-hera-asteroid-mission-launch-success\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-esa-hera-asteroid-mission-launch-success\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-esa-hera-asteroid-mission-launch-success\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hera spacecraft<\/a> arrives at the Dimorphos-Didymos system.<\/p>\n<p>The $398 million Hera mission will conduct a detailed post-impact survey of Dimorphos and could reveal whether the fan-shaped streaks survived the collision, researchers say.
