{"id":324196,"date":"2026-03-11T13:16:10","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T13:16:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/324196\/"},"modified":"2026-03-11T13:16:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T13:16:10","slug":"interstellar-comet-3i-atlas-is-bursting-with-methanol-new-study-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/324196\/","title":{"rendered":"Interstellar comet 3I\/ATLAS is &#8216;bursting with methanol,&#8217; new study finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"cb73860a-6f20-43dd-a45e-9672531e7a8e\">Astronomers studying the interstellar visitor 3I\/ATLAS have discovered the comet is unusually rich in alcohol \u2014 a chemical clue that could reveal how planets and icy bodies form around other stars.<\/p>\n<p>Using the powerful radio antennas of the Atacama Large Millimeter\/submillimeter Array (<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/25534-alma.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/25534-alma.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/25534-alma.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ALMA<\/a>) in Chile, researchers detected extremely strong signals of methanol (CH3OH), a simple alcohol molecule, in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/comets.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/comets.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/comets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the comet<\/a>&#8216;s expanding cloud of gas.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"cb73860a-6f20-43dd-a45e-9672531e7a8e-2\">As <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/comets\/new-interstellar-object-3i-atlas-everything-we-know-about-the-rare-cosmic-visitor\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/comets\/new-interstellar-object-3i-atlas-everything-we-know-about-the-rare-cosmic-visitor\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/comets\/new-interstellar-object-3i-atlas-everything-we-know-about-the-rare-cosmic-visitor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">3I\/ATLAS<\/a> approached <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the sun<\/a> and sunlight warmed its icy surface, it released gas and dust, forming a glowing halo \u2014 or coma \u2014 around its core, which allowed ALMA to analyze the comet&#8217;s chemical composition in detail.<\/p>\n<p>Article continues below <\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"e6f18779-8ee1-4fc7-b29b-f4822a4a1766\">The measurements show that methanol is far more abundant, relative to hydrogen cyanide, than astronomers typically see in comets from our own <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar system<\/a>. That chemical imbalance suggests 3I\/ATLAS likely formed in a planetary system with very different physical conditions \u2014 such as colder temperatures and\/or a different chemical inventory \u2014 than the one that produced our own comets, according to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/public.nrao.edu\/news\/alma-detects-extremely-abundant-alcohol-in-interstellar-comet-3i-atlas\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/public.nrao.edu\/news\/alma-detects-extremely-abundant-alcohol-in-interstellar-comet-3i-atlas\/\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a statement<\/a> from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Observing 3I\/ATLAS is like taking a fingerprint from another solar system,&#8221; Nathan Roth, lead author of the study and a professor at American University, said in the statement. &#8220;The details reveal what it&#8217;s made of, and it&#8217;s bursting with methanol in a way we just don&#8217;t usually see in comets in our <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">own solar system<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Methanol \u2014 which is used for industrial purposes here on Earth, in contrast to the drinkable ethanol \u2014 isn&#8217;t rare in space. It forms on the surfaces of icy dust grains in interstellar clouds and is commonly incorporated into comets during planet formation. But the amount detected in 3I\/ATLAS appears unusually high compared with the ratios seen in solar system comets, making the object a valuable chemical &#8220;fingerprint&#8221; from another planetary system.<\/p>\n<p>Discovered in July 2025 by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System, 3I\/ATLAS is only the third known object confirmed to have entered the solar system from interstellar space. The first was <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/oumuamua.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/oumuamua.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/oumuamua.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;Oumuamua<\/a>, spotted in 2017, followed in 2019 by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/interstellar-comet-borisov-most-pristine-ever\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/interstellar-comet-borisov-most-pristine-ever\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/interstellar-comet-borisov-most-pristine-ever\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2I\/Borisov<\/a>, which displayed a more traditional comet-like appearance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>Since 3I\/ATLAS&#8217; discovery, telescopes around the world \u2014 including the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hubble Space Telescope<\/a> and the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/james-webb-space-telescope-takes-1st-look-at-interstellar-comet-3i-atlas-with-unexpected-results\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/james-webb-space-telescope-takes-1st-look-at-interstellar-comet-3i-atlas-with-unexpected-results\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/james-webb-space-telescope-takes-1st-look-at-interstellar-comet-3i-atlas-with-unexpected-results\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">James Webb Space Telescope<\/a> \u2014 have been monitoring the comet as it travels through the inner solar system. Images show a diffuse coma and faint dust tail created as sunlight heats the comet&#8217;s ices, releasing gas and dust into space.<\/p>\n<p>Those outflows also help explain another phenomenon observed around the comet: a vast cloud of gas glowing in X-rays as charged particles from the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22215-solar-wind.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22215-solar-wind.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22215-solar-wind.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar wind<\/a> slam into material escaping from the nucleus. The ALMA observations further revealed that hydrogen cyanide mostly streams directly from the comet&#8217;s nucleus, while methanol is released both from the nucleus and from icy grains in the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/comets\/interstellar-comet-3i-atlas-shines-in-new-image-space-photo-of-the-day-for-march-2-2026\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/comets\/interstellar-comet-3i-atlas-shines-in-new-image-space-photo-of-the-day-for-march-2-2026\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/comets\/interstellar-comet-3i-atlas-shines-in-new-image-space-photo-of-the-day-for-march-2-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coma<\/a> acting like miniature comets \u2014 the first time such detailed outgassing behavior has been mapped in an interstellar object, according to the statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Sye7gV5yuME9CoKuHsW8ge.jpg\" alt=\"A blue ball of light shines between streaks of blueish light from stars in outer space\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Sye7gV5yuME9CoKuHsW8ge.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Sye7gV5yuME9CoKuHsW8ge.jpg\" class=\"inline\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>A Hubble Space Telescope image of comet 3I\/ATLAS. But the growing body of evidence \u2014 including its comet-like tail, gas jets and molecular composition \u2014 strongly indicates that the object is a natural icy body.<\/p>\n<p>For astronomers, that&#8217;s the real excitement.
