{"id":325426,"date":"2026-03-12T05:50:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-12T05:50:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/325426\/"},"modified":"2026-03-12T05:50:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-12T05:50:09","slug":"election-2026-green-party-mps-suffer-big-drops-in-draft-list-tamatha-paul-ranked-high-as-party-hypes-maori-candidates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/325426\/","title":{"rendered":"Election 2026: Green Party MPs suffer big drops in draft list, Tamatha Paul ranked high as party hypes M\u0101ori candidates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">Steve Abel, the party\u2019s agriculture and animal welfare spokesman, was ranked ninth on the 2023 list but is now at 14. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">Scott Willis, who made it into Parliament in 2023 with a ranking of 12 and has become the party\u2019s energy spokesman, is at number 16.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">Mike Davidson, the party\u2019s newest MP, who entered Parliament after the exit of Benjamin Doyle and had a position of 19 in 2023, is down at 22.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">If these positions don\u2019t change when the final list is released, and current polling is replicated at the November 7 election, these MPs may struggle to return to Parliament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">In the latest Taxpayers\u2019 Union-Curia poll, the Greens received 10.5%, meaning the party would win 13 seats. In nearly every reported poll over the past year, it has had enough support to secure seats in the early teens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">Candidates can be boosted between the draft and the final list.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">For example, in 2023, Willis was ranked 18th in the draft list, but 12th in the final. Photo \/ Mark Mitchell<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">Those three MPs are ranked below some new candidates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">For example, Craig Aaron Pauling, a former Environment Canterbury chair, is at 12. Bhen Goodsir, an Auckland Pride co-chair, is listed at 13.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">As<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/former-te-pati-maori-lawyer-tania-waikato-to-stand-for-green-party-in-2026-general-election\/CLOBZRE5LNG6XMIXIFHNDRBSMA\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/former-te-pati-maori-lawyer-tania-waikato-to-stand-for-green-party-in-2026-general-election\/CLOBZRE5LNG6XMIXIFHNDRBSMA\/\"> the Herald reported last year<\/a>, former Te P\u0101ti M\u0101ori lawyer and prominent Treaty activist Tania Waikato is standing for the Greens. She is at 15 on this list.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">Former Nelson Deputy Mayor Rohan O\u2019Neill-Steven is at 17. Justice for Palestine spokeswoman Yasmine Serhan is at 18, and former Te P\u0101ti M\u0101ori candidate Heather Hinemoa Te Au-Skipworth is at 19.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">Louise Hutt, a former Hamilton City councillor, is at 20, while Shreejan Pandey, a Monash Energy Institute director, is at 21.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">In terms of those on the up, Teanau Tuiono is ranked third, up from fifth on the 2023 final list, while Paul is fourth. She has received considerable attention<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/green-mp-tamatha-paul-on-trying-to-navigate-a-fine-line-audrey-young\/BJ6PRHUXIBHI3DUIAZ5GXHXGDY\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/green-mp-tamatha-paul-on-trying-to-navigate-a-fine-line-audrey-young\/BJ6PRHUXIBHI3DUIAZ5GXHXGDY\/\"> this term for her views on law-and-order policies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">H\u016bhana Lyndon is ranked sixth, up from 10th in 2023, while Dr Lawrence Xu-Nan has made a major jump from 16th to seventh. Francisco Hernandez has risen from No 17 to No 10.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">Green Party co-leader Marama Davidson said this was a \u201cstrong electable list of people who represent diverse communities\u201d. She said they are \u201cready for Government\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAotearoa has enough for everyone to thrive, and we can build a society that works for people and planet. Only the Greens have a plan to ensure everyone\u2019s needs are met, and nature is healthy.
