Lola Young<\/a> has spoken out for the first time after collapsing on stage during a festival in New York last year.<\/p>\n

The singer, 25, fell ill while performing at the All Things Go Music Festival at Forest Hills Stadium last September, collapsing mid-song before being carried off stage<\/a> by members of the technical crew.<\/p>\n

Young, whose hit Messy propelled her to global fame, had been singing Conceited when the incident happened.<\/p>\n

She later cancelled a string of concerts for the \u201cforeseeable future\u201d<\/a> as she stepped back from performing.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Rolling Stone<\/a>, the singer revealed the frightening moment came at a time when her her previously disclosed struggle with cocaine addiction<\/a> had reached a dangerous point.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a bunch of hate, but you know what? F**k it,\u201d she told the publication.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Going away] was a decision that I had to make\u2026 What else was I going to do? Die? That was the reality of where my addiction<\/a> was heading.\u201d<\/p>\n

Young has previously spoken about entering rehab to tackle substance abuse.<\/p>\n

The London-born star admitted she had continued performing despite struggling privately.<\/p>\n

\u201cI chose to hurt myself and self-sabotage, and I also chose to get onstage and perform,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Despite the ordeal, Young said she now sees the incident as a turning point.<\/p>\n

She said she is \u201cvery grateful that it happened\u201d, explaining that the collapse forced her to confront the seriousness of her addiction and begin working towards \u201ca better future\u201d.<\/p>\n

The star also revealed she received messages of support from fellow artists including Katy Perry, Elton John and Lady Gaga.<\/p>\n

Her career has since gone from strength to strength. Earlier this year she received five Brit Award nominations and last month won her first Grammy, taking home Best Pop Solo Performance for Messy.<\/p>\n

After the win, Young said she planned to celebrate without alcohol and was later spotted drinking an energy drink while attending a star-studded Universal Music party alongside Shania Twain.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am going to have an In-N-Out burger with my manager and everyone,\u201d she said at the time. \u201cI don\u2019t drink, but it\u2019s going to be fun anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n

Young has also spoken openly about her mental health<\/a>, revealing in 2022 that she was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder at the age of 17.<\/p>\n

In an Instagram post at the time, she said the diagnosis had profoundly shaped her life but insisted it would not define her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have struggled immensely learning to accept this part of myself, and I am still learning,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have to remind myself that I am a regular person.
