{"id":327504,"date":"2026-03-13T09:41:10","date_gmt":"2026-03-13T09:41:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/327504\/"},"modified":"2026-03-13T09:41:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-13T09:41:10","slug":"i-believe-it-may-have-fallen-from-someones-grocery-bag-scientist-finds-unlikely-creature-in-us-parking-lot-and-only-has-one-thing-on-his-mind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/327504\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;I believe it may have fallen from someone\u2019s grocery bag.\u201d Scientist finds unlikely creature in US parking lot \u2013 and only has one thing on his mind&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When chance brought a lone crustacean to a scientist\u2019s car park in the USA, he had an unusual response: try to get an exceptionally detailed 3D scan of the animal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was on my way to work when my daughter happened to notice a crawfish in our parking lot,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lsu.edu\/amac\/about\/staff.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rog\u00e9rio Gomes dos Santos<\/a>, a light microscopy specialist at Louisiana State University\u00a0(LSU). \u201cI have no idea how it ended up there, but I believe it may have fallen from someone\u2019s grocery bag.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most people wouldn\u2019t know how to deal with this situation but Gomes dos Santos immediately sprung into action. \u201cHe did what any good scientist would do,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/lsuresearch\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LSU Research<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DVd7v4UjkYD\/?img_index=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram<\/a>. \u201cHe placed it into the micro-CT scanner of the LSU\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lsu.edu\/amac\/index.php\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Advanced Microscopy and Analytical Core (AMAC)<\/a>!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Micro-computed tomography (<a href=\"https:\/\/lsu.edu\/amac\/instruments\/3d-imaging\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">microCT<\/a>) scanners create exceptionally detailed, high resolution scans. Gomes dos Santos and the team scanned the crawfish (also known as a crayfish or crawdad, depending on where you&#8217;re from) to create pictures of an astonishingly comprehensive image. \u201cWe bet you\u2019ve never seen a crawfish in this much detail,\u201d says LSU.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Micro-CT shows the crawfish in extraordinary detail.
