{"id":329544,"date":"2026-03-14T15:33:18","date_gmt":"2026-03-14T15:33:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/329544\/"},"modified":"2026-03-14T15:33:18","modified_gmt":"2026-03-14T15:33:18","slug":"philip-and-lyneyre-hooper-of-the-hoopman-family-trust-top-taranaki-ballance-farm-environment-awards-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/329544\/","title":{"rendered":"Philip and Lyneyre Hooper of the Hoopman Family Trust top Taranaki Ballance Farm Environment Awards 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">Judges described the Hoopers as \u201ca great farming couple working and living on the land, while enhancing and protecting the natural resources that surround them\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">They said the Hoopers ran a well-managed farming operation that worked with the high-altitude environment to enhance biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cA great example of a low-input farm operation which takes account of the fragile nature of the area, while still maintaining a productive pasture-based system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">The couple\u2019s tenure has focused heavily on land development and infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">When they began, the property had just four troughs and no races.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">Today, every paddock has reticulated water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">Significant regrassing and a shift toward organic liquid fertilisers have improved soil health and pasture diversity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">Environmental protection has been central to the couple\u2019s approach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">The Hoopers have fenced and retired 32ha of wetland forest remnants, creating an important ecological connection to Te Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki National Park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">They continue the intergenerational guardianship of Gratiola concinna, a nationally endangered wetland herb, working alongside the Department of Conservation on translocation projects and habitat protection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">Extensive riparian planting, stock exclusion and water monitoring led to excellent water quality outcomes, with regional council testing confirming strong macroinvertebrate index results.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">Philip\u2019s innovative, DIY approach has also seen the installation of solar-powered pumps and mobile-monitored flow meters that detect leaks instantly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">Diversification into glamping and active involvement in local catchment groups further strengthen the resilience of their business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe live in a place of natural beauty on the side of our stunning maunga.
