It comes after Gull service stations across Auckland ran out of petrol<\/a> this week as motorists took advantage of discount-day deals.<\/p>\n

Motorists took to social media to vent frustration over fuel pumps running dry. In some cases, they had pre-paid for petrol that didn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t waste your time going to Gull Onehunga, the 91 and 95 is out of order,\u201d one person said on Facebook.<\/p>\n

Fears of soaring global oil prices have rocked markets since the start of the Iran war two weeks ago.<\/p>\n

The price of Brent crude \u2013 the international benchmark \u2013 has surged to around the US$100-a-barrel mark, reaching a high of US$120 earlier this week, having been sitting under US$70 before the conflict.<\/p>\n

This has seen prices at the pump for Kiwi motorists surge past the $3-a-litre mark in many areas around the country.<\/p>\n

Channel Infrastructure chief executive Rob Buchanan \u2013 whose company owns the Marsden Point terminal and pipeline services \u2013 played down worries about fuel supply in New Zealand while speaking on Ryan Bridge TODAY earlier this week.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s just important to be measured about where we\u2019re at,\u201d Buchanan said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe current stockholding in New Zealand and ships on the water is pretty comforting in terms of the amount of days\u2019 cover.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we can\u2019t control are international events, but also the oil industry is good at readjusting supply chains and just needs time to do it and that\u2019s why we\u2019ve got these types of buffers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Buchanan said Channel Infrastructure has the equivalent of 12 days\u2019 worth of New Zealand\u2019s fuel consumption in storage at Marsden Point.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, the Commerce Commission also warned businesses<\/a> over petrol surcharges and price rises.<\/p>\n

Commissioner Bryan Chapple said he has communicated with fuel companies and is prepared to publicly \u201ccall out\u201d pricing that exacerbates ongoing global price movements.<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody wants to see fuel companies using the situation in the Middle East as an excuse to unjustifiably increase prices at the pump. Any retail price increases should be aligned with actual increases in the cost of sourcing fuel.<\/p>\n

\u201cPublic scrutiny is a powerful tool and we will use it.\u201d<\/p>\n
