{"id":331642,"date":"2026-03-16T02:31:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-16T02:31:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/331642\/"},"modified":"2026-03-16T02:31:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T02:31:08","slug":"democrats-pick-healthcare-as-a-key-issue-to-win-tight-pa-congressional-races","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/331642\/","title":{"rendered":"Democrats pick healthcare as a key issue to win tight Pa. congressional races"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">As <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/democratic-party\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Democrats<\/a> look to flip four key swing congressional districts in Pennsylvania, they\u2019re centering their message on healthcare and the cost of living. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Part of that message will involve reminding voters that congressional <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/republican-party\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Republicans<\/a> approved $1 trillion in cuts to Medicaid over 10 years to help pay for Trump\u2019s signature tax cuts, potentially eliminating health coverage for 300,000 Pennsylvanians, according to state estimates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The cuts to the popular entitlement program won\u2019t take effect until January 2027, two months after the midterm election. The timing creates a lag that could shield Republican incumbents who can navigate election season without having to face disgruntled constituents grappling with lost benefits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">But Democrats want to make sure voters understand that pain postponed is still pain. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cPeople will hear that Republicans put us in this spot,\u201d said Eugene DePasquale, chair of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party. \u201cThey made huge Medicaid cuts in exchange for tax cuts for billionaires. That\u2019s why healthcare will be a central theme in this election season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Throughout the next nine months, party leaders say, Democrats will look to broaden Medicaid eligibility, cap drug costs, close gaps in rural healthcare, and fight for reproductive rights. They will also be pledging to address a spike in insurance premiums by restoring enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies, a COVID-era policy which expired at the end of last year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">A national poll released by NBC News this week found that voters favor Democrats over Republicans to handle healthcare by a 20-point margin, <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2026-election\/poll-trump-struggles-immigration-prices-iran-democrats-midterm-edge-rcna261861\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2026-election\/poll-trump-struggles-immigration-prices-iran-democrats-midterm-edge-rcna261861\">the party\u2019s biggest advantage on any issue. <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cCrowds erupt and people get loud when I mention healthcare and how Republicans are using it to pay for tax breaks,\u201d said Bob Brooks, a Democrat running for Congress in the Lehigh Valley. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cFor Democrats, healthcare is the message.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Brooks, a Bethlehem firefighter and the president of the Pennsylvania Professional Fire Fighters Association, is part of a crowded fielded seeking the party\u2019s nomination to take on freshman U.S. Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, who was recently ranked the most vulnerable Republican in the country by the National Journal. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Mackenzie, who voted for Trump\u2019s signature law, has more than 17,500 people in his district who could lose Medicaid coverage, according to the state Department of Human Services, which administers the federally funded program in Pennsylvania. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">White House spokesperson Kush Desai pushed back on Democratic messaging in a statement Wednesday, painting the policy changes as a way to safeguard the program in the long-term. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cThe Trump administration is not cutting Medicaid, but implementing commonsense work requirements, citizenship verification, and other reforms to slash waste, fraud, and abuse. This historic undertaking to protect and preserve Medicaid as a lifeline for the Americans who truly need it naturally takes time to implement,\u201d Desai said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Trump\u2019s new law established new Medicaid <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/medicaid\/5-key-facts-about-medicaid-work-requirements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/medicaid\/5-key-facts-about-medicaid-work-requirements\/\">work requirements<\/a>, which require people aged 19 to 64 on Medicaid to file paperwork every six months to show they work 20 hours a week to qualify for the program, unless they meet exemptions for physical or mental disabilities. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The majority of people expected to lose coverage as the result of this policy change will be people who fail to complete paperwork even if they are working the required hours, Benjamin Sommers, a health economist at Harvard University\u2019s School of Public Health, <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/hsph.harvard.edu\/news\/how-medicaid-cuts-could-lead-to-loss-of-coverage-for-millions\/#:~:text=Sommers:%20Starting%20in%20January%202027,to%20not%20navigate%20it%20successfully.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/hsph.harvard.edu\/news\/how-medicaid-cuts-could-lead-to-loss-of-coverage-for-millions\/#:~:text=Sommers:%20Starting%20in%20January%202027,to%20not%20navigate%20it%20successfully.\">noted last year when the law was passed. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hoping for change in November <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Adrian Parker, 53, of <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/south-philly\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">South Philadelphia<\/a>, works as a caregiver for her 32-year-old daughter Danielle, who suffered a traumatic brain injury 15 years ago and receives Medicaid. The program allows beneficiaries to use their funds to pay for care administered by family members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Even though her daughter\u2019s disability should keep her Medicaid coverage intact, Parker said she worries that she might not be able to keep up with increased paperwork under the new law, which could jeopardize her daughter\u2019s benefits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cWith what I\u2019m seeing, I don\u2019t know what the future holds with Medicaid,\u201d Parker said. \u201cI\u2019m hoping the November elections will change who\u2019s in charge of the government. I\u2019m a voter, and what I\u2019m seeing being done to Medicaid is horrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Parker lives in retiring U.S. Rep. Dwight Evans\u2019 district, the most Democratic-leaning district in the state. And while the district won\u2019t be competitive in November, Medicaid and how Republicans have reshaped it will be at the top of Parker\u2019s mind when she heads to polls to pick Evans\u2019 successor in the May Democratic primary. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In Philadelphia, an estimated 73,000 residents on Medicaid won\u2019t have it beginning next year, according to the <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pa.gov\/agencies\/dhs\/resources\/data-reports#accordion-f267244c79-item-0e60614a1d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.pa.gov\/agencies\/dhs\/resources\/data-reports#accordion-f267244c79-item-0e60614a1d\">state<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">And across the four collar counties, a projected 40,000 people will be affected, including nearly 11,000 in U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick\u2019s district, which covers <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/bucks-county\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bucks County<\/a> and part of <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/montgomery-county\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Montgomery County<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Fitzpatrick (R., Bucks) represents one of the four GOP-held district Democrats are targeting in the fall. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">He\u2019s the only one of the four swing-district Republicans to vote against the final version of Trump\u2019s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, though he voted for an earlier version of the legislation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Fitzpatrick cited deeper cuts to Medicaid in the final bill as the reason he voted no, but Democrats still plan to hammer him for his initial vote <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/nation\/inq2\/pennsylvania-house-republicans-voted-trump-big-beautiful-bill-trump-tax-agenda-20250522.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/nation\/inq2\/pennsylvania-house-republicans-voted-trump-big-beautiful-bill-trump-tax-agenda-20250522.html\">to move the bill forward. <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Bucks County Commissioner Bob Harvie, a Democrat running for Fitzpatrick\u2019s seat, said he\u2019s received questions at town halls about the Medicaid cuts from older people. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cPrices at nursing homes will go up for everyone,\u201d he said, \u201cand it\u2019ll be harder to find quality assisted care, making healthcare an affordability issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Neither Fitzpatrick nor Mackenzie\u2019s campaigns responded to a request for comment on the upcoming Medicaid cuts. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Spokespeople for Pennsylvania\u2019s two other swing-district Republicans, U.S. Rep. Rob Bresnahan and <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/scott-perry\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Scott Perry<\/a>, also did not comment.
