{"id":331673,"date":"2026-03-16T03:00:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-16T03:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/331673\/"},"modified":"2026-03-16T03:00:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T03:00:08","slug":"average-price-of-petrol-hits-near-four-year-high-as-kiwis-urged-not-to-panic-buy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/331673\/","title":{"rendered":"Average price of petrol hits near four-year high as Kiwis urged not to panic-buy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">In Auckland, the cheapest available 91 grade rose 24 cents from $2.59 on Friday to $2.83 on Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">According to Gaspy, more than 150 Auckland petrol stations, or close to two-thirds, were selling 91 for more than $3 a litre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">In Wellington, the cheapest available 91 had increased 22 cents over the weekend to $2.88.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">Willis told the Herald yesterday there was about 50 days of petrol and diesel in the country, or on its way here.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThere isn\u2019t any need to panic-buy,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIf international supplies are disrupted, the Government has a range of options open to ensure those who most need fuel continue to have access to it, but we are not yet at the point where additional action is required.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">Petrol pumps ran dry at some Gull service stations across Auckland on Saturday \u2013 the second time in three days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">At least six Gull stations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/iran-war-petrol-pumps-run-dry-at-gull-stations-across-auckland-amid-battle-for-cheaper-fuel\/5IH6IFXF4FH35FNH6B2UC2BQJE\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/iran-war-petrol-pumps-run-dry-at-gull-stations-across-auckland-amid-battle-for-cheaper-fuel\/5IH6IFXF4FH35FNH6B2UC2BQJE\/\">were affected last Thursday<\/a> after prices were cut by 14 cents a litre on discount day, prompting a surge of demand from motorists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">A spokesperson for Gull said yesterday some of its logistics providers were \u201cstruggling to meet the current 15% plus increase in demand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cGull has good levels of fuel at its terminal and is working as fast as practical with our logistics\u2019 providers to get fuel to our sites to meet Gull\u2019s customers\u2019 increased demand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt is important to highlight that there is still plenty of fuel for everyone in Auckland [and] the rest of New Zealand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">Waitomo chief executive Simon Parham told the Herald today that one of its sites ran dry over the weekend due to terminal loading being delayed by two hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cOther than that, our network was continuously replenished,\u201d Parham said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAnd we\u2019re obviously keeping a close eye on that today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cFor the last two weeks, we have seen a sustained uptake in demand, around about 15%. So that\u2019s been reasonably consistent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">Parham urged Kiwis to buy normally and not hoard petrol.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThere\u2019s plenty of product out there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe don\u2019t aim to run out because you can\u2019t sell what you don\u2019t have. So it\u2019s about getting product to market and keeping the market as full as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">A spokesperson for Z Energy, which also operates the budget self-service fuel stations U-Go, said it was closely monitoring the rapidly evolving situation in the Middle East.\u202f<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThe impacts on Z\u2019s ability to supply our customers remain minimal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cHowever, global energy markets remain highly volatile and, to the extent the situation in the Middle East remains unresolved, we can expect to see growing pressure on global fuel supply chains.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">Z Energy said it was seeing \u201cincreased demand\u201d in some areas of its network.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cOur teams are working as quickly and safely as possible to move fuel through our network. At this stage, there is no shortage of fuel overall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">Nelson Petroleum Distributors (NPD) chief executive Barry Sheridan said they have noticed a lift in demand over recent days amid the ongoing uncertainty in the international oil market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cOur network is coping well and there are currently minimal issues with fuel supply,\u201d Sheridan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmpeAfkwcv\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe have our own in-house logistics team and fleet of trucks and drivers.
