{"id":332437,"date":"2026-03-16T15:10:16","date_gmt":"2026-03-16T15:10:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/332437\/"},"modified":"2026-03-16T15:10:16","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T15:10:16","slug":"hidcote-transformed-into-storybook-world-for-new-exhibition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/332437\/","title":{"rendered":"Hidcote transformed into storybook world for new exhibition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  A new Cotswolds exhibition blends photography, illustration and storytelling to reimagine Hidcote as a magical threshold where &#8216;reality slips into wonder&#8217;.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A Place That Whispers, featuring 30 artworks by internationally acclaimed photographic artists Anderson ns Low, will be on display at Hidcote from March 16 to September 13.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The artists said: &#8220;Ultimately, this exhibition is a homage\u2014not only to Hidcote and its maker, but to the enduring idea of the garden as a threshold\u2014a place where reality slips into wonder and where landscape itself becomes fable.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Jonathan Anderson and Edwin Low\u00a0discovered Hidcote during the COVID-19\u00a0pandemic.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A spokesperson said: &#8220;With few visitors and silent paths, the garden felt like a forgotten storybook.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;Hidcote became both sanctuary and muse,\u00a0and the inspiration for\u00a0this exhibition.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The artists described the gardens as &#8216;a world more akin to legend, myth and fairy tales than present life&#8217;, where \u2018ancient trees whispered myths\u2019 and \u2018flowers bloomed with character\u2019.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Their exhibition, displayed in the entrance hall of Hidcote\u2019s Manor House, brings these impressions to life using direct-to-plate (DTP) photopolymer gravure.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  This is a pioneering, sustainable and chemical-free printmaking approach.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Each image is accompanied by its own story\u2014whether a fairy tale, myth or fantastical tale\u2014drawn from diverse cultural traditions and perspectives, becoming both a visual and literary journey.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Anderson and Low are also visiting research fellows at Birmingham School of Art, Birmingham City University, where they are pioneering the DTP technique.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Their photographs are held in collections including the National Portrait Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Hidcote, now Grade I listed, was created by Major Lawrence Johnston.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Designed as a series of interconnected garden \u2018rooms,\u2019 it features plants collected from his travels around the world.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The garden has been cared for by the National Trust since 1948.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  For visitors to the exhibition, normal admission to Hidcote applies and there is no need to book in advance.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Full details are available via the National Trust website.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A new Cotswolds exhibition blends photography, illustration and storytelling to reimagine Hidcote as a magical threshold where &#8216;reality&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":332438,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[31],"tags":[442,498,499,500,501,156,111,139,69],"class_list":["post-332437","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-arts-and-design","tag-arts","tag-arts-and-design","tag-artsanddesign","tag-artsdesign","tag-design","tag-entertainment","tag-new-zealand","tag-newzealand","tag-nz"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/332437","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=332437"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/332437\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/332438"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=332437"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=332437"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=332437"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
