In Facebook posts leading up to the vigil, Tamaki called Kirk \u201ca modern day Martyr for Jesus Christ\u201d.<\/p>\n
He said the event hopes to honour the life of Kirk, who Tamaki described as \u201ca man whose courage and faith lit a fire in millions\u201d.<\/p>\n

Kirk, who was known as a major ally of President Donald Trump, was shot dead in a \u201cpolitical assassination\u201d that sparked fears of more political violence in an increasingly febrile United States.<\/p>\n
The 31-year-old was killed at a Utah university earlier this month in front of thousands of people. The alleged killer is 22-year-old Tyler Robinson. <\/p>\n
While his motive remains unclear, the killing has sparked conversations about the widening gap between left and right politics.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Tamaki headed a march down Auckland\u2019s Queen St, claiming \u201cthe spread of non-Christian religions is now out of control\u201d in New Zealand.<\/p>\n
