{"id":335230,"date":"2026-03-18T05:54:12","date_gmt":"2026-03-18T05:54:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/335230\/"},"modified":"2026-03-18T05:54:12","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T05:54:12","slug":"indian-farmers-turn-to-bear-costumes-to-scare-monkeys","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/335230\/","title":{"rendered":"Indian farmers turn to bear costumes to scare monkeys"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Monkeys have become a menace on farms in northern India, eating potato and strawberry crops and even entering homes and ransacking fridges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Farmers in Sambhal district, Uttar Pradesh, have become so desperate that they have resorted to dressing up as bears and growling at them to protect their crops.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Previous attempts at scaring the monkeys away \u2014 running after them with brooms, banging drums and pans, and installing scarecrows \u2014 proved to be inefficient. Knowing that monkeys are terrified of bears, they bought bear costumes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">At the sight of the fake bears, the monkeys \u2014 sometimes almost 100 strong \u2014 ran for their lives and kept away, at least for a while.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Similar methods have been tried in cities across north India, where monkeys have become so accustomed to foraging for food in populated areas that they enter homes and eat whatever they find.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cThey smashed our water pipes, broke the water tank on the roof, and smashed our pot plants. When I waved a stick at them, they snarled back,\u201d said Ratna Aggarwal, who lives in New Friends Colony in South Delhi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/world\/asia\/article\/delhi-hopes-2d-cutouts-will-stop-cheeky-monkeys-ruining-g20-summit-wmh8bd309\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Delhi hopes 2D cutouts will stop cheeky monkeys ruining G20 summit<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">In areas of the capital where ministers and MPs live, monkeys are such a problem that men are sometimes hired to wear langur costumes to impersonate the larger, black-faced monkeys that terrify rhesus monkeys. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Real langurs were used to chase away rhesus monkeys for decades, but in 2012 India began enforcing a neglected wildlife law that prohibits keeping langurs in captivity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">But the \u201cmonkey men\u201d, like the farmers in bear costumes, are not a permanent solution because they fail to address the two causes of the problem.
