{"id":33660,"date":"2025-09-20T19:02:06","date_gmt":"2025-09-20T19:02:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/33660\/"},"modified":"2025-09-20T19:02:06","modified_gmt":"2025-09-20T19:02:06","slug":"humpback-whale-breach-spectacle-in-costa-rica-captured-on-camera-by-kayakers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/33660\/","title":{"rendered":"Humpback whale breach spectacle in Costa Rica captured on camera by kayakers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A group of kayakers in <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/11\/health\/this-costa-rican-resort-is-dishing-up-luxury-longevity-meals\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Costa Rica<\/a> got to see an amazing show of a humpback whale and its calf breaching the water in late August.<\/p>\n<p>The Mamawata Surf Retreat group were kayaking at Playa Escondido hoping to see some whales while in the water on Aug. 23, when the humpbacks started breaching right next to them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were secretly hoping to spot some whales since my boyfriend and I had been seeing them from our house the past few days,\u201d a person with Mamawata Surf Retreat said in a post to their Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>They captured a video of the spectacle, as one of the whales splashed back down into the water close to their kayaks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/13\/world-news\/humpback-whale-freed-from-tangled-fishing-line-in-challenging-operation\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Humpback whales<\/a> are common to see in Costa Rica\u2019s waters, as the species migrates from the Northern Hemisphere in the first half of the year during winter.<\/p>\n<p>According to the International Whaling Commission, from July to mid-November, humpback whales that feed in the Antarctic Peninsula and southern Chile make the species\u2019 longest recorded migration to breed in Costa Rica\u2019s warm waters.<\/p>\n<p>The Mamawata Surf Retreat group were kayaking at Playa Escondido.
