Landslide clearance work<\/a> is expected to be completed by June, when Whang\u0101rei District Council<\/a> will look at what sort of roading repairs may be required.<\/p>\n

The slip is blocking the main southern entrance road to the severe-weather-hit Whangaruru coast.<\/p>\n

\u014cakura community members at the Civil Defence recovery workshop next Thursday will also hear about the K\u0101iikanui Rd southern detour and their community\u2019s storm-damaged hall.<\/p>\n

The interactive workshop aims to provide on-the-ground recovery information after \u014cakura and surrounds were hit by destructive weather in January, when more than a summer\u2019s worth of rain fell overnight.<\/p>\n

Specialist Whang\u0101rei District Council Civil Defence recovery team staff will be at the workshop to update the community on larger-scale issues, including the Helena Bay hill slip, which is expected to take 15,000 truckloads to clear.<\/p>\n

Staff will also cover more localised weather event consequences with individual \u014cakura property owners who might need more information or help.<\/p>\n

The workshop will be held at the \u014cakura sports complex in the settlement\u2019s Wharua Rd from 2pm-4pm.<\/p>\n

It is predominantly angled towards residents, bach owners and others dealing with issues in the coastal settlement of \u014cakura, but people outside the coastal settlement can also attend.<\/p>\n

The workshop will also provide updates about the geology of the slip that hit \u014cakura\u2019s community hall and resulted in it being red-stickered, along with the community\u2019s adjacent public toilets.<\/p>\n

In a recovery milestone, the public toilets were reopened on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The 17km Kaiikanui Rd detour<\/a> route, now two months on from its January 22 introduction, will also feature at the workshop.<\/p>\n

\u014cakura wastewater will also be discussed. Properties that are not yet on the coastal settlement\u2019s reticulated sewerage system will be able to find out about joining it, as part of efforts to reduce sewage from septic tanks contaminating floodwaters.<\/p>\n

The workshop focuses solely on Whang\u0101rei District Council Civil Defence recovery.<\/p>\n

It comes after a number of earlier multi-agency, on-the-ground recovery hubs around the weather-hit Whangaruru district. These, in contrast, brought together a wider range of organisations involved in emergency response work.<\/p>\n
