When I watched Mark Zuckerberg open his Meta Connect keynote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/80s0chTOsK0?si=n_Jgb2cKXtt7Ly9S&amp;t=1908\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">by giving the world a live backstage tour from his new glasses<\/a>, I was transported back to 2012.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">I was in the live audience at Google I\/O when Sergey Brin introduced the world to some friends about to jump out of an airship, high above the event. I watched, agape, as athletes dove through the sky, launched bikes across the roof, rappelled down the side of the Moscone Center in San Francisco, then strode onto the stage right in front of me \u2014 all while streaming the whole thing live from their Google Glass headsets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">We\u2019d never seen anything like it before \u2014 or since. \u201cGoogle Wins The Internet With A Live Skydiving Demo Of Google Glass,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2012\/06\/27\/sergey-brin-demos-google-glass-at-io\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">declared TechCrunch<\/a>. \u201cGoogle One-Ups Apple\u2019s Famed Keynotes,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2012\/06\/google-one-ups-apples-famed-keynotes-with-a-live-skydiving-demo-of-google-glass\/259062\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wrote The Atlantic<\/a>. (Our headline was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2012\/6\/27\/3121164\/project-glass-demo-io\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a bit more reserved<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">It\u2019s an energy that\u2019s been conspicuously missing from product launches ever since the covid-19 pandemic, when Apple began turning its once-exciting keynotes into highly polished 60- or 90-minute prerecorded videos. There\u2019s excitement in knowing that something is real, that a demo can fail. Even if a demo does fail, it isn\u2019t always bad! It reinforces the idea that everything else you\u2019re seeing is real.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">But if there\u2019s a chance you\u2019re going to fail, you need to be ready to fail. The demos need to be cool enough to genuinely wow if you actually pull them off. Or at the very least, the reward and risk should be aligned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">At Meta Connect, it was immediately clear Zuck was trying to bring at least a smidge of the same anything-can-happen energy that Google offered in 2012, now that he was introducing the first high-profile set of glasses with a screen since Google itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/apple-event\/774963\/apple-september-launch-event-ai-apple-intelligence\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apple having largely whiffed on AI for the past few years<\/a>, and Google having somewhat retreated from live risk after its AI made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/2\/8\/23590864\/google-ai-chatbot-bard-mistake-error-exoplanet-demo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">factual errors in demos<\/a>, wouldn\u2019t it be wonderful if Meta could look braver and smarter than its competitors? I get the logic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">But Zuck didn\u2019t come ready to fail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Zuck tried again and again and again and again to answer a glasses-to-glasses video call from Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth \u2014 something that can be notoriously unreliable even with fully released video calling solutions, much less a demo on stage. That\u2019s even though the reward, if successful, would only be a simple demo of wireless video calling tech we\u2019ve had for ages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Earlier, he brought on chef Jack Mancuso to demonstrate how Meta\u2019s glasses could help him whip up a \u201cKorean-inspired steak sauce\u201d by analyzing the ingredients in front of him and walking him through a recipe \u2014 only for the disembodied AI voice to inform him he was already partway through the recipe and leave him dumbly repeating the line \u201cWhat do I do first?\u201d again and again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Then, he and Zuck had the gall to blame the fail on the Wi-Fi, as if an utter lack of connectivity could have tricked the glasses into thinking he\u2019d already chopped up green onions and put them in a bowl. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/781730\/meta-explains-live-ai-smart-glasses-demo-failures\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">It was not the Wi-Fi<\/a>, and every techie watching the keynote knew it; usually, voice assistants stop talking at all when they lose connection.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">It later became clear that Zuck had been slinging some additional bullshit by pretending to think up a \u201cKorean-inspired steak sauce\u201d for Chef Cuso to attempt. <a href=\"https:\/\/kotaku.com\/meta-ai-mark-zuckerberg-korean-steak-sauce-facebook-2000626808\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kotaku\u2019s John Walker<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup ewrhy38 _1xwtict1\">The hilariously clearly-labeled bottles of \u201cSesame Oil\u201d and \u201cSoy Sauce,\u201d with the words squarely facing the camera, sit next to\u2014oh my goodness, would you look at that\u2014a jar of Cuso-branded seasoning! There\u2019s also some spring onions, a couple of lemons, two garlic cloves, salt and pepper and maybe a potato and a bottle of honey? It\u2019s all next to a very sad-looking steak sandwich. So, Meta AI, what can we possibly do?<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Even so, the demo fails weren\u2019t necessarily product failures for Meta, at least if you were watching the whole keynote. To me, the hiccups made it more impressive when the demos actually worked. I spent less time thinking about how Meta could have totally faked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/80s0chTOsK0?si=roE_HB1CP62qEhY0&amp;t=3244\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">that bit where Zuck scribbles out an invisible message<\/a> with his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/779566\/meta-ray-ban-display-hands-on-smart-glasses-price-battery-specs#:~:text=the%20Meta%20Neural%20Band\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new neural wristband<\/a> than I would have otherwise, and more time marveling at a demo where the glasses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/report\/781673\/blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">caption what people are saying in real time<\/a>, right in front of your eyes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">When Boz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/80s0chTOsK0?si=Sm9RgXhsPbkQqapB&amp;t=3472\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">apologized for fumbling the controls during that demo<\/a>, it made me think: Oh, this one is real! Video: Meta \/ animation by The Verge<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Zuck blaming the Wi-Fi, and trying again and again to get a demo working, reminded me of that time Steve Jobs blamed the Wi-Fi for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=znxQOPFg2mo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">his own Apple demo fail in 2010<\/a>. He was trying to browse The New York Times on the new iPhone 4, but it just wouldn\u2019t load.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Like Zuck, Jobs also didn\u2019t plan for failure that time: instead, he soon paused the entire keynote and told a room full of journalists they had to turn off the 570 Wi-Fi hotspots they\u2019d apparently brought into the room.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">\u201cAll you bloggers need to turn off your base stations, turn off your Wi-Fi, every notebook, put \u2019em down on the floor,\u201d he decreed (and then asked a bit more politely).<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">But there was a method to the madness. Jobs really did have a good reason to disrupt his entire keynote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Twenty minutes later, after additional wireless demos, Steve Jobs said he had <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/in9SX3enCHU?si=A-XwjZS243kiQ0WQ&amp;t=2217\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one more thing<\/a> to share \u2014 and made the first video call between two iPhones, the first public demonstration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2010-06-07-facetime-video-calling-added-to-iphone-4.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">of FaceTime<\/a>. That\u2019s when video calling technology was still novel (though it did exist). The reward was worth the risk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Skydive if you\u2019re going to get the world to say you\u2019ve got the best tech demo ever; tell a room full of journalists to turn off their hotspots if you\u2019re going to make the first iPhone video call. Don\u2019t worry about little hiccups: because of Jobs\u2019 earlier fail, there was no question in 2010 that FaceTime was real. But if the best you\u2019ve got is a half-canned cooking demo and yet another video call, be ready to move on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">I do hope we can return to live demos again. Most people who are willing to sit through tech keynotes understand that software is hard, hardware is harder, and fails happen! And for many of us, the failures show your product is real.
