“I don\u2019t know if I ever thought it would happen in my lifetime,” the 58-year-old country superstar admits to PEOPLE.<\/p>\n
But McGraw was alive, kicking \u2014 and soaking in every second of it \u2014 when his name was announced on Friday, along with hit-making songwriter Paul Overstreet and the legendary bluegrass duo, the Stanley Brothers, as the newest members of the Hall of Fame. Their induction this fall will bring membership to 161 in the hallowed hall, which is located in Nashville.<\/p>\n
As delighted as McGraw was to receive country\u2019s highest honor, he also was quick to say there\u2019s still something else that would top it. \u201cWhen I\u2019m sitting out here,\u201d he said, motioning to the center of the Hall of Fame Rotunda that had been filled with chairs for the announcement, \u201cand Faith<\/a> is at the podium. I can\u2019t wait. That\u2019ll be a bigger moment than this.\u201d<\/p>\n Faith Hill, of course, is his wife, who can boast her own superstar solo career along with being one-half of the country powerhouse couple that everyone knows by their first names only. On Friday, she was sitting on the front row in the rotunda, soaking in the joy of her husband\u2019s moment, and she received his lengthy, tight embrace the moment he had finished speaking. (The couple\u2019s three adult daughters, Gracie,<\/a> Maggie<\/a> and Audrey<\/a>, could not attend because of work commitments, but McGraw said they didn\u2019t forget their dad\u2019s big day: \u201cI got tons of calls this morning and tons of love.\u201d)<\/p>\n During his remarks, McGraw had to fight back tears and sometimes choked on his words, especially as he thanked Hill.<\/p>\n \u201cI wouldn’t be standing here today if it weren\u2019t for great women in my life,\u201d he told the crowd of about a hundred who\u2019d gathered for the invitation-only event, \u201cfrom my grandmother to my mom, my sisters, my daughters, and most of all, to my wife. Thank you, baby. I would not be standing here today if it wasn’t for you, nor would I want to be.”<\/p>\n Tim McGraw at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville on March 20, 2026 Later, McGraw described how Hill has contributed to his success, starting with her role in his sobriety; he\u2019s been open about her intervention in what he called \u201cthe hell-bent road I was headed down.\u201d But he also noted that, over their almost 30-year marriage, each has made the other better: \u201cWe sort of pushed each other and elevated each other\u2019s careers.\u201d<\/p>\n McGraw is well acquainted with the heights: 49 No. 1 country singles (including such classics as \u201cLive Like You Were Dying,\u201d \u201cHumble and Kind\u201d and \u201cI Like It, I Love It\u201d), 106 million records sold worldwide, 13 studio albums to top the Billboard chart. His tours with Hill are among the highest grossing in country music history. Among the honors he\u2019s received are 11 CMA Awards and three Grammys, and he\u2019s also branched out to a memorable acting career.<\/p>\n He learned he was going into the Hall of Fame, he said, during what he thought was a business call with his management, which he took while walking on a New York City street.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m listening with earpods, and they said, \u2018Hey, Tim, somebody else is on the line,\u2019\u201d McGraw recalls.<\/p>\n Suddenly, he said, he found himself talking to Country Music Association CEO Sarah Trahern, though at first he couldn\u2019t figure out why.<\/p>\n \u201cShe said something about the Hall of Fame, and I totally missed what she was saying,\u201d he recalled. \u201cIt didn\u2019t register at all, so I stopped walking and I said, \u2018Hold on. Somebody\u2019s gonna have to explain this to me because I don\u2019t understand what you\u2019re saying.’ And she says, \u2018Tim, we\u2019re calling to tell you that you are going to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Hearing that, he said, \u201cI just lost it right on the street in New York. I\u2019m sure people were running in all directions from me when that happened. I was just sobbing on the street.\u201d<\/p>\n A little over a month since that call, he said he\u2019s still having a hard time absorbing the news. It\u2019s new juice, I guess. I\u2019ve gotta prove I belong here now!\u201d<\/p>\n No need, Tim \u2014\u00a0but his calendar is full of opportunities for him to keep his glow on, with a summer tour<\/a>, new music to record and \u201csome acting stuff\u201d all in the works.<\/p>\n “It\u2019s gonna be a busy couple of years,\u201d McGraw said.<\/p>\n Paul Overstreet earned his spot in the Hall of Fame with country classics written over three decades, beginning with his first chart-topper, The Forester Sisters\u2019 \u201cI Fell in Love Again Last Night,\u201d in 1985. The many other hits he\u2019s co-written include The Judds\u2019<\/a> \u201cLove Can Build a Bridge,\u201d Kenny Chesney<\/a>‘s \u201cShe Thinks My Tractor\u2019s Sexy,\u201d Randy Travis<\/a>‘ \u201cDiggin\u2019 Up Bones\u201d and Blake Shelton<\/a>‘s \u201cSome Beach.\u201d<\/p>\n Perhaps his most fruitful collaboration has been with Don Schlitz, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2017<\/a>; together they wrote Travis signature songs \u201cForever and Ever, Amen,\u201d \u201cOn the Other Hand\u201d and \u201cDeeper Than the Holler,\u201d as well as \u201cWhen You Say Nothing at All,\u201d which Keith Whitley <\/a>took to No. 1 in 1988 and Alison Krauss <\/a>placed in the top 5 in 1995. Overstreet also has enjoyed a successful career as a recording artist with such hits as \u201cI Won\u2019t Take Less Than Your Love,\u201d recorded with Tanya Tucker<\/a> and Paul Davis; \u201cDaddy\u2019s Come Around\u201d and \u201cSeein\u2019 My Father in Me.\u201d<\/p>\n Paul Overstreet at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville on March 20, 2026 Despite his many appearances on the charts as a singer and songwriter, Overstreet, 71, told PEOPLE that he has measured his career not by numbers but by how his music has affected his listeners.<\/p>\n He quickly points to two of his favorites: \u201cWhen I play \u2018Seein\u2019 My Father in Me,\u2019 people will tell me later, \u2018Boy, that tore me up,\u2019 or some lady will say, \u2018Man, you tore my husband up.\u2019\u201d He\u2019s also found \u201cWhen You Say Nothing at All\u201d is a song that can magically silence a chatty room into submission. \u201cThere\u2019s a spirit,\u201d he said, \u201cin that combination of the music and the words.\u201d<\/p>\n The Stanley Brothers are among the most influential bluegrass acts, making a name for themselves with their celestial vocals and breakneck picking (Ralph on banjo and Carter on guitar) and their band, the Clinch Mountain Boys. Their 1959 duo, \u201cI Am a Man of Constant Sorrow,\u201d contributed to the 1960s folk revival and found new audiences decades later when it was featured in the Coen brothers\u2019 film classic O Brother, Where Art Thou?<\/p>\n Carter Stanley died, at age 41, in 1966 of liver failure, and Ralph, two years younger, continued with the Clinch Mountain Boys. Over the years, he mentored new generations of bluegrass musicians, including Keith Whitley and Ricky Skaggs<\/a>. His haunting a cappella performance of \u201cO Death,\u201d for O Brother, Where Art Thou?, earned him a Grammy for best male country vocal performance at age 75. He died of skin cancer in 2016 at age 89.<\/p>\n Three of the brothers\u2019 children accepted the Hall of Fame honor on behalf of their fathers on Friday: Ralph\u2019s son Ralph Stanley II, who now leads the Clinch Mountain Boys, and daughter Lisa Stanley Marshall; and Carter\u2019s daughter, Jeanie Stanley.<\/p>\n Lisa Stanley, Jeanie Stanley and Ralph Stanley II represent 2026 Inductees, The Stanley Brothers onstage at the Country Music Hall of Fame Inductee Press Conference at Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum on March 20, 2026 in Nashville In their remarks, they expressed just as much relief as excitement that this moment had finally arrived.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s been a long time coming,\u201d said Jeanie Stanley, who has had her own career as a bluegrass musician.<\/p>\n Her uncle, she said, talked openly about his desire to be in the Hall of Fame: \u201cHe told me that he wanted brother Carter and him to be inducted together, side by side, just like when they started out. He said, \u2018That\u2019s the one thing I don\u2019t have that I want.\u2019 You don\u2019t know what I would give if he had lived to see this, both of \u2019em \u2026 The cotton gets no higher.”<\/p>\n![\"Tim](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/65d691d66ce81d90d78e877c303350ad.jpeg\"\/)
