Tom Hanks in FinchImage via Apple TV

Tom Hanks is one of the most renowned actors in the world, with some of his greatest performances dating back over 30 years to his work in Philadelphia and Big. Hanks is also famous for his blockbuster role as Forrest Gump in the heartfelt comedy/drama film of the same name, and he’s even lent his voice to Woody in Toy Story for years now. He’s a two-time Oscar-winner, and when you’ve been in movies as long as he has, it’s only natural that some will land with the masses better than others. Hanks is one of the greatest living actors, which also allows you the liberty to star in some projects that other actors might deem too risky.

Five years ago, Hanks starred in the Apple TV straight-to-streaming sci-fi movie, Finch, which is set on a post-apocalyptic version of Earth. In this alternate reality, a robot, who was built by his creator to protect the life of his beloved dog, learns what it’s like to be human through the values of friendship and love. Finch was met with a mostly positive reception from both critics and audiences, leading to it holding marks of 74% and 68% on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. Craig Luc and Ivor Powell wrote the script for the film, and it was directed by Miguel Sapochnik, famed for directing episodes of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. Although it’s been five years since Finch was added to Apple TV, the film is still one of the top 10 most popular watches in more than 15 countries around the world.

The year before Finch was added to Apple TV, Hanks starred in another Apple TV movie, Greyhound. The WWII film follows an inexperienced submarine commander who has to lead his crew against a deadly German submarine wolf pack. Greyhound has become one of the most-watched Apple TV movies of all time, and the streamer even greenlit a sequel, which is now in production overseas. Greyhound 2, which returned Hanks and his co-star Stephen Graham, is expected to continue filming throughout the year. It will likely be released to Apple TV sometime next year.
