Cresci et al.)<\/p>\n<p id=\"e1526285-8b95-4af5-8ea1-027166ca5bfa\">The aptly named Very Large Telescope captured a colorful new portrait of the Triangulum Galaxy, revealing complex clouds of gas in between the galaxy&#8217;s 40 billion stars.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-7c7ee56e-8969-4b8e-a8cc-b80c0c405e04\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>What is it?<\/p>\n<p id=\"7748a813-2e93-4150-bff2-db37deec1732\">This image was captured by the European Southern Observatory&#8217;s (ESO) <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40736-very-large-telescope.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40736-very-large-telescope.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40736-very-large-telescope.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Very Large Telescope<\/a> (VLT) in Chile&#8217;s Atacama Desert and depicts clouds of gas in the Triangulum Galaxy, found some 3 million light-years away from Earth.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"7748a813-2e93-4150-bff2-db37deec1732-1\">Astronomers used the VLT&#8217;s Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) instrument to separate light from the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/25585-triangulum-galaxy.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/25585-triangulum-galaxy.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/25585-triangulum-galaxy.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Triangulum Galaxy<\/a> (also known as Messier 33, or M33) into its constituent wavelengths, revealing the presence of different elements in clouds of gas between the galaxy&#8217;s young <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stars.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Article continues below <\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>In the image, blue represents oxygen, green represents hydrogen, and red denotes the presence of sulfur.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-c60cb451-ac6d-4c47-99cf-a957158a050e\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>Why is it amazing?<\/p>\n<p id=\"58ca5899-e437-4283-82d5-bf3734d9c5d8\">According to Anna Feltre, a postdoctoral researcher at the INAF-Astrophysical Observatory and author of a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aanda.org\/articles\/aa\/full_html\/2026\/02\/aa57122-25\/aa57122-25.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.aanda.org\/articles\/aa\/full_html\/2026\/02\/aa57122-25\/aa57122-25.html\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">new study<\/a> about the Triangulum Galaxy, this new image is a reminder that the space between stars is far from empty.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This cosmic interplay produces a spectacular and dynamic landscape, revealing that the birthplaces of stars are far more beautiful and complex than we ever imagined,&#8221; Feltre said in an <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/images\/potw2612a\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/images\/potw2612a\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ESO statement<\/a> accompanying the new image.<\/p>\n<p>Stars \u200a\u2014\u200a particularly young, still-forming ones like those found in the central region of the Triangulum Galaxy \u200a\u2014\u200a shape their surrounding environments with radiation, ionizing clouds of gas and causing those clouds to glow.
