Officials in Hawaii today ordered some 4000 people living near an ageing dam on the island of Oahu to evacuate the area immediately, following severe rains that have battered the region.<\/p>\n

\n The century-old Wahiawa dam, located in the north of Hawaii\u2019s third-largest island, which is home to the state capital
\n Honolulu, \u201cis at imminent risk of failure\u201d, the local emergency management agency warned.\n <\/p>\n

There is \u201cpotential life-threatening flooding\u201d in areas below the dam, it added.<\/p>\n

\u201cLEAVE downstream area NOW!\u201d it said, recommending that people carpool to ease traffic congestion.<\/p>\n
