{"id":346948,"date":"2026-03-25T11:26:12","date_gmt":"2026-03-25T11:26:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/346948\/"},"modified":"2026-03-25T11:26:12","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T11:26:12","slug":"nasa-announces-new-mars-mission-reshapes-goals-on-the-moon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/346948\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA announces new Mars mission, reshapes goals on the moon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zkutg001w27qa6ho16uuh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            NASA\u2019s new chief is reshaping the space agency\u2019s goals, unveiling at an event in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday an ambitious vision that includes revamped plans for a moon base.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbdy00013b6r70frrcxv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While the space agency has long had its sights set on creating a settlement on the moon for astronauts to live and work more permanently, Tuesday marked the first time NASA has revealed a timeline and road map for such efforts.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbdy00023b6rwoye3dnx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe moon base will not appear overnight,\u201d NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said at the event, called Ignition.   \u201cWe will invest approximately $20 billion over the next seven years and build it through dozens of missions.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbdy00033b6ratkdfxdf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It was not immediately clear how much of the $20 billion NASA could divert from other projects or how much new funding would be required.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbdy00043b6rwhkjpclw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some other projects announced Tuesday by Isaacman, who took office in December, would have much tighter deadlines, most notably a brand-new nuclear-powered Mars vehicle the agency hopes to launch by 2028 \u2014 a lightning-fast timeline in the world of space travel.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbdy00053b6rlgugsfe6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The pathway to funding these innovations and bringing them to fruition is largely unclear and not without friction.    But they offer key insights into the transformative plans mapped out by Isaacman, who aims to inject a sense of urgency into NASA\u2019s scientific and human spaceflight pursuits.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbdz00073b6r2qqi3np4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Since stepping into his role, Isaacman has been working to implement bold changes \u2014 from announcing a push to hire workers and bolster NASA\u2019s \u201ccore competencies\u201d to setting up a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/02\/27\/science\/nasa-moon-landing-artemis-schedule\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new mission<\/a> that\u2019s effectively a precursor to the next astronaut moon landing. And he has struck a notably more aspirational and transformative tone than many of his predecessors.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbdz00083b6rhz441bv5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tuesday marked his most extensive effort yet to convey that enterprising vision.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbdz00093b6ryg9tlvt5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf we concentrate NASA\u2019s extraordinary resources on the objectives of the National Space Policy, clear away needless obstacles that impede progress, and unleash the workforce and industrial might of our nation and partners,\u201d Isaacman said, \u201cthen returning to the moon and building a base will seem pale in comparison to what we will be capable of accomplishing in the years ahead.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbdz000a3b6rlcu0kx0y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Among the flurry of announcements Isaacman made Tuesday was the revelation that NASA will pause plans to work with international partners to develop a space station to orbit the moon, called Gateway.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbdz000b3b6rp3d8z3vd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Envisioned as a means of supporting trips to the lunar surface as well as missions to farther destinations, the Gateway space station would have served a stop-off point in the moon\u2019s orbit to coordinate trips for cargo and people.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbdz000c3b6rx97wh7x2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The agency will instead put existing Gateway resources to use in other ways, including building the lunar base.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbdz000d3b6ryywq03dp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSignificant parts of exiting Gateway hardware and facilities can be directly repurposed to support near-term exploration objectives along with those orbital elements needed to support a surface-focused mission,\u201d according to Carlos Garcia-Galan, NASA\u2019s Moon Base program executive.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbdz000e3b6rp50mfw7h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Isaacman has said NASA will also work to drastically increase the number of robotic landers carrying cargo and science instruments to the moon \u2014 aiming to make landings a monthly occurrence. For context, NASA and its commercial partners have sent four landers toward the moon since January 2024 with varying degrees of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/17\/science\/blue-ghost-moon-lander-mission-ends\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">success<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbdz000f3b6rup3axw3t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ramped-up robotic missions would work in tandem with the crewed missions of NASA\u2019s Artemis program, the effort to return astronauts to the moon\u2019s surface for the first time in half a century, to lay the groundwork for a lunar settlement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbdz000g3b6rafzz4obq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The first crewed mission of the Artemis program, called Artemis II, is slated to launch as soon as April 1 and will fly around the moon without landing on it. The ultimate goal is to put boots back on the moon by early 2028 and pave the way for more frequent landings thereafter with perhaps two crewed missions per year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbe0000i3b6rrcumyd4k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Issacman\u2019s plan is pushing NASA to shift requirements and contracts, and reimagine how its space-based infrastructure will work together \u2014 especially with the Gateway space station sidelined.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbe0000j3b6rwtt7nbpf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He said he has also made clear to commercial space companies and NASA contractors that he is unwilling to repeat hangups of the past, when contractors have been given billions of dollars and underperformed. For example, both the Orion crew capsule and Space Launch System rocket, which were built by industry partners including Lockheed Martin and Boeing, respectively, have been billions of dollars over budget and years behind schedule  \u2014 a fact that has prompted some scathing reports from NASA\u2019s Inspector General.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbe0000k3b6rmx1cn4yl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Currently, Jeff Bezos\u2019 Blue Origin and Elon Musk\u2019s SpaceX are also racing to develop the lunar landers needed to ferry astronauts from Orion down to the moon\u2019s surface. Recent NASA oversight reports have warned that the companies\u2019 efforts lag behind schedule and risk pushing the agency\u2019s plans to land humans on the moon beyond the 2028 goal. Both companies have submitted proposals to NASA for expediting their lunar lander development, but officials have declined to provide details about the plans.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbe0000l3b6r5f7mv7pb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Speaking to a room of industry personnel and other space officials, Isaacman warned: \u201cExpect uncomfortable action\u201d if companies underperform on their contracts. That could suggest Isaacman is more willing than his predecessors to pull the cord on projects that turn out to be more costly, difficult and time-consuming than initially thought.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbe0000m3b6rb8j6rba9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Isaacman also suggested that he plans to have NASA personnel work more extensively with the private sector.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbe0000n3b6rbkdjhy67@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cNASA will not be watching and hoping for the best, but will be deeply embedded alongside industry, increasing the chances of successful landings,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbe0000p3b6r6x4ig7va@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The 2028 Mars mission, which Isaacman called Space Reactor\u20111 Freedom \u2014 or SR-1 Freedom \u2014 would put nuclear electric propulsion technology to use in space for the first time.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbe0000q3b6r84wobd5h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Isaacman has been a vocal proponent of the technology, which promises to offer extremely efficient engines ideal for powering missions to deep space. But the tech presents difficult design challenges and could carry high costs along with the risks inherent to launching nuclear systems, including radiation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbe0000r3b6r2t4clsyk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bringing nuclear electric propulsion to fruition is not the only goal of the SR-1 Freedom mission.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbe0000s3b6rxvumi82h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The vehicle would take up the objectives previously announced as part of a proposed mission called Skyfall, designed to deploy helicopters on the Martian surface that could follow in the footsteps of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/01\/25\/world\/nasa-mars-ingenuity-helicopter-mission-ends-scn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ingenuity<\/a>, the first vehicle to achieve controlled flight on Mars.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbe0000t3b6rc1948kvo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Findings from the SR-1 Freedom mission would also inform NASA\u2019s plans to create a fission reactor on the moon\u2019s surface, which could power the lunar base throughout the lunar day and night. The agency previously revealed its intention to launch such a reactor by 2030.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbe0000u3b6r36iag7pc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Steven Sinacore, NASA\u2019s program executive for Fission Surface Power who will also oversee the SR-1 Freedom mission, told CNN that he does anticipate needing to get the general public acquainted with such technologies to ease concerns.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmn4zmbe0000v3b6rs1y9izu6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI do think we will have to sensitize the public, or at least explain to the public what it is,\u201d Sinacore said. \u201cUltimately \u2014 it is safe. On the ground the reactor is off. There\u2019s no radiation coming from it. It doesn\u2019t actually turn on until you\u2019re up in space, and that\u2019s where the radiation comes from.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/editor-note\/instances\/cmn51s0ow00003b6r7s8ra3mu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"editor-note\" class=\"editor-note-elevate vossi-editor-note_elevate inline-placeholder \" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n    NASA\u2019s Artemis program is sending humans into deep space for the first time in more than five decades.
