{"id":347427,"date":"2026-03-25T17:47:18","date_gmt":"2026-03-25T17:47:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/347427\/"},"modified":"2026-03-25T17:47:18","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T17:47:18","slug":"two-dead-after-car-flips-upside-down-into-stream-in-wellington","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/347427\/","title":{"rendered":"Two dead after car flips upside down into stream in Wellington"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/4JR7YEI_Image_jpg.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"700\" alt=\"Emergency services are at the scene of a crash that's left a car upside down in a stream in rural Wellington on 25 March.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\n<p>Photo: RNZ \/ Mark Papalii\n<\/p>\n<p>Two bodies have been found inside a car that was discovered upside down in a stream in rural Wellington this morning.<\/p>\n<p>Police, Fire and Emergency and Wellington Free Ambulance were called to the crash in M\u0101kara just after 8am.<\/p>\n<p>Fire and Emergency shift manager Alex Norris said crews arrived to find a car partially submerged in the stream on M\u0101kara Beach Road &#8211; a narrow, winding road between Karori and M\u0101kara Beach.<\/p>\n<p>The bodies were found by police when they arrived at the scene.<\/p>\n<p>The road was closed for several hours but has since reopened.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/4JR83OK_map_jpg.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"715\" alt=\"Makara Rd in Wellington map\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\n<p>Photo: Google Maps\n<\/p>\n<p>A local resident who did not want to be named said they could see the crash site from their home.<\/p>\n<p>They said they saw at least four police vehicles, two ambulances and a fire appliance attending the crash as well as white blanket laid on the ground.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/4JR7YEI_Image_1_jpg.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"700\" alt=\"Emergency services are at the scene of a crash that's left a car upside down in a stream in rural Wellington on 25 March.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\n<p>Photo: RNZ \/ Mark Papalii\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Usually you hear stuff a night but we didn&#8217;t hear anything out of the ordinary. Our neighbour told me it&#8217;s quite a common place where people go off there&#8217;s about a two to three metre drop from the road down to the stream.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve witnessed cars having a head on collision on the stretch before and a bunch of near misses. I haven&#8217;t really had a chance to let it sink in.
