Sometimes they look like normal functioning \u2013 just with the entire system slowly rewired underneath.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/earthsnap.onelink.me\/3u5Q\/ags2loc4\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">&#13;<br \/>\n    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fit-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/earthsnap-banner-news.webp.webp\" alt=\"EarthSnap\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The researchers say invasive bees are reshaping Chile\u2019s native plant-pollinator networks in what they call a \u201csilent takeover.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The networks are still operating. Flowers are still being visited. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/flowers-turned-to-animals-for-pollination-during-ancient-warming\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pollination<\/a> is still happening. But the relationships are becoming more generalized and homogenized, and that shift threatens the long-term stability of one of the world\u2019s most distinctive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/landscapes-with-a-mix-of-habitats-are-biodiversity-hotspots\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">biodiversity hotspots<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Why Chile is especially vulnerable<\/p>\n<p>Chile isn\u2019t just another country with interesting ecosystems. Ecologically, it functions like a \u201cbiogeographical island,\u201d separated by huge natural barriers: the Andes to the east, the Atacama Desert to the north, and the Pacific Ocean to the west.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That isolation helped create a highly specialized set of plants and pollinators \u2013 the kind of tight partnerships that can take a long time to evolve.<\/p>\n<p>The downside of that specialization is fragility. When new species arrive and start interacting broadly, they can disrupt those finely tuned relationships.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And Chile has a long history of introducing non-native bees for agriculture, often to improve crop pollination.<\/p>\n<p>The new study set out to measure what those introductions have done to the wider pollination network over time.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers paid special attention to the invasive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/bumblebee-colonies-have-a-surprisingly-organized-defense-drill\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bumblebee<\/a> Bombus terrestris (the buff-tailed bumblebee), a species that has expanded aggressively in parts of South America.<\/p>\n<p>What the researchers did differently<\/p>\n<p>Instead of focusing on one region or one crop, the team tried to reconstruct the national story by building a large dataset of pollinator interactions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The researchers compiled more than 2,100 records, combining historical scientific observations with citizen science data.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They focused on three non-native bees that are now widespread: the western honeybee Apis mellifera, the buff-tailed bumblebee Bombus terrestris, and the large garden bumblebee Bombus ruderatus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe motivation was to understand whether these invasions were simply adding species to the system or quietly transforming it from within,\u201d explained lead author Rafaela Cabral Marinho from the <a href=\"https:\/\/ufu.br\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Universidade Federal de Uberl\u00e2ndia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That framing matters because an ecosystem can \u201clook fine\u201d if you\u2019re only counting species or measuring basic pollination rates.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The deeper question is whether the structure of interactions \u2013 who pollinates whom, and how specialized those relationships are \u2013 is being altered.<\/p>\n<p>One invader dominates the conversation<\/p>\n<p>The clearest result was how dominant Bombus terrestris has become. In the combined dataset, it accounted for more than 70% of all recorded interactions. That\u2019s an astonishing level of integration for a relatively recent arrival.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat level of integration into a national pollination network is remarkable for a relatively recent invader,\u201d said study co-author Barbara Guimar\u00e3es.<\/p>\n<p>The study also found that invasive bees tended to interact heavily with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/non-native-plants-arent-staying-invisible-to-enemies-anymore\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">non-native plants<\/a>, and they behaved in a highly generalist way \u2013 visiting many different plant species rather than forming tighter relationships with a smaller set.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the short run, that can keep pollination \u201cworking.\u201d In the long run, it can reduce the uniqueness and stability of native mutualisms.<\/p>\n<p>What changed after 2005<\/p>\n<p>To see how the network shifted over time, the researchers compared data from before and after 2005 \u2013 the year B. terrestris began to be used extensively in open fields.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That comparison revealed a worrying trend: native species were being displaced over time, including Bombus dahlbomii, the iconic giant bumblebee native to southern South America.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe networks did not collapse; instead, they became more generalized and homogenized. Native bees were not always disappearing completely,\u201d the authors wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe system kept functioning, but in a different way. This quiet reorganization is what led us to describe the process as a \u2018silent takeover.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the uncomfortable part. If you only look for obvious die-offs, you may miss the transformation until it\u2019s far along. The ecosystem may still be humming, but it\u2019s becoming less distinctive and potentially less resilient.<\/p>\n<p>The role of citizen science <\/p>\n<p>A big chunk of the dataset came from people outside academia \u2013 everyday observers logging bees and flower visits. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were surprised by the volume and value of citizen science contributions, and how they can provide meaningful insights when combined with research data,\u201d Font\u00farbel said.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a practical takeaway: citizen science isn\u2019t just nice for outreach. For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/species-invasions-do-not-destroy-ecosystems-all-at-once-they-have-a-plan\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">invasive species<\/a> tracking, it can be one of the best early warning systems available, especially across large geographic areas.<\/p>\n<p>Subtle changes with a big impact<\/p>\n<p>The researchers argue that biological invasions don\u2019t always arrive as sudden disasters. They can be slow shifts in relationships that change how ecosystems function and what kinds of interactions survive.<\/p>\n<p>Invasive bees may boost pollination for some crops, and they may even keep overall flower visitation rates high.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the cost is that native, specialized relationships can weaken. Over time, that can lead to biotic homogenization \u2013 ecosystems becoming more similar to one another and less unique.<\/p>\n<p>And for a place like Chile, whose biodiversity has been shaped by isolation and specialization, that is a real threat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne key takeaway is that biological invasions are not always catastrophic overnight events. They can be gradual reorganizations of ecological relationships,\u201d the researchers noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile invasive bees may increase pollination for certain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/creating-resilient-crops-to-cope-with-the-climate-crisis\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">crops<\/a>, they can simultaneously reduce the specialization and stability of native mutualisms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur research highlights that conservation is not only about protecting species, but it is also about protecting interactions.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Future research directions <\/p>\n<p>The study ends with a pretty clear call for more coordinated policy. The researchers advocate for stronger regulation and planning around species introductions, better early detection and monitoring, and continued public engagement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This will be very helpful since once a generalist pollinator is embedded across a network, reversing the change becomes extremely difficult.<\/p>\n<p>The bigger message is that conservation isn\u2019t only about keeping species from going extinct.
