The Northland and Far North areas were the worst hit by this week\u2019s weather, with 230-280mm of rain hitting the regions. <\/p>\n
The Whang\u0101rei District Council and the Far North District Council remain in states of emergency. More than 50 roads \u2013 plus six state highways \u2013 were shut across Northland on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Shackleton, who has lived in her house for 20 years, believed the flooding happened after a riverbank failed. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re standing here at midnight and there was no wind, there were stars in the sky and there was just this force of water coming through the road, just slowly building up and building up like we were getting a riverside property. So, it was quite eerie.\u201d<\/p>\n
Shackleton said the road was still flooded because of a blocked drain \u201cso the water\u2019s still here because it\u2019s physically got nowhere to go\u201d.<\/p>\n

Her neighbour, Dave Arrell, said emergency services arrived at midnight to take them away when the road was covered in over a metre of water.<\/p>\n
Arrell, who has lived in his house for 15 years, said he was lucky the water only reached his door sill and didn\u2019t come in. <\/p>\n
Other houses on the street \u201call had about six inches of water through\u201d.<\/p>\n
The Far North town received more than double its monthly rainfall in two days, said MetService.<\/p>\n
Arrell said it had been a stressful experience.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s no fun. You don\u2019t wish it on anybody and the whole country\u2019s been getting dealt to, so we\u2019re all getting a turn, it seems.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI could do with a bit more sleep,\u201d said Arrell. <\/p>\n
The Pak\u2019nSave Kait\u0101ia store and fuel site had some flooding. The store is now open but its fuel site will be closed until \u201cuntil assessments are made\u201d.<\/p>\n
