Some cast members <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/mormon-wives-layla-taylor-miranda-hope-respond-to-taylor-frankie-paul-s-domestic-violence-investigation-11930913\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">from both \u201cThe Secret Lives of Mormon Wives\u201d<\/a> \u2014 in which Paul stars \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/bachelor-nation-erupts-abc-pulls-taylor-frankie-pauls-bachelorette-sea-rcna264452\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">and the \u201cBachelor\u201d universe<\/a> distanced themselves. Several content creators who focus on pop culture analysis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@michelleannxo\/video\/7619028748997872909\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">condemned<\/a> the display of domestic violence.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-db08c2\" class=\"body-graf\">But Paul also had a slew of vocal defenders who rushed to social media to label the incident \u201creactive abuse,\u201d a term used to describe when an abuse victim is pushed to respond in an aggressive manner. It\u2019s a topic that often becomes an online flashpoint among advocates, experts and commentators after high-profile domestic violence cases make headlines.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d50980\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cMost people online are either completely condemning Taylor or completely justifying it,\u201d Courtney Tracy, a licensed clinical social worker in California, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reels\/DWF4H1lEU7G\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">video posted online<\/a> last week. \u201cThe truth is none of us really know what\u2019s going on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/rockcms\/2026-01\/asterisk-43f04b.svg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>FORSUBSCRIBERS<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/RC_B-y58slt.jpg\" alt=\"The story behind the NBC News story on Taylor Frankie Paul\" class=\"inline-video__thumbnail\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-317f29\" class=\"body-graf\">In the video, seemingly captured by Paul\u2019s ex-boyfriend Dakota Mortensen and released by TMZ last week, Paul is seen screaming, attacking Mortensen and throwing three barstools during a February 2023 altercation at her house. Shortly after the stool is thrown, her young daughter, who was nearby on the sofa during the fight, can be heard crying.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-49f251\" class=\"body-graf\">NBC News has not independently verified the TMZ video, which does not capture what led up to the moment the video began, nor has it viewed the original full video. Court records indicate that Paul pleaded guilty in abeyance to an aggravated assault charge in August 2023.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-bb793c\" class=\"body-graf\">There are currently no criminal allegations against Mortensen, who filed a temporary restraining order against Paul and was granted temporary full custody of their 2-year-old son, Ever.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9c8569\" class=\"body-graf\">But in a statement issued last week in response to the video\u2019s release, Paul\u2019s representative said the reality star is \u201cgaining strength to face her accuser and taking steps to ensure that she and her children are protected from any further harm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c3e156\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThere are too many women who are suffering in silence as they survive aggressive, jealous ex-partners who refuse to let them move on with their lives,\u201d the spokesperson added. \u201cTaylor has remained silent out of fear of further abuse, retaliation, and public shaming. She is currently exploring all of her options, seeking support, and preparing to own and share her story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2c27bb\" class=\"body-graf\">Mortensen also issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/dakota-mortensen-statement-after-taylor-frankie-paul-abuse-claims-attack-video-bachelorette-11930337\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement to People<\/a> after the video\u2019s release, saying: \u201cAs anyone who has seen the video will understand, this is a deeply upsetting situation. I am, unfortunately, used to these baseless claims about me and our relationship, which I categorically deny. The acronym, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/behavior\/darvo-meaning-taylor-frankie-paul-bachelorette-slomw-rcna264469\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">became ubiquitous in the discourse around Paul<\/a>, stands for \u201cdeny, attack and reverse victim and offender.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-e7b173\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cSometimes people are pushed to their limits if they\u2019re dealing with abuse day in and day out, mentally, physically, financially, psychologically,\u201d said Ally Langan, a social media user who shared her analysis about how there\u2019s \u201cno perfect victim\u201d when it comes to abuse, telling NBC News she drew from her own experiences.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-8421f0\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cPeople are human, and they do get to a point where they snap, and then the abuser catches just that one moment on camera and not all the other moments leading up to it,\u201d Langan added.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-7cf9f2\" class=\"body-graf\">The discussion mirrors other high-profile cases, including the civil trial between actors Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, where millions of viewers analyzed their relationship in real time and debated who was the victim.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a9aaf5\" class=\"body-graf\">Heard settled months after a weekslong televised trial culminated with jurors\u2019 finding that she had defamed Depp by writing in a 2018 op-ed for The Washington Post that she had become a \u201cpublic figure representing domestic abuse.\u201d Although the essay never mentioned Depp by name, his attorneys said it indirectly referred to allegations she made against him during their 2016 divorce.<\/p>\n<p>Read more of NBC&#8217;s coverage of Taylor Frankie Paul: <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4852e5\" class=\"body-graf\">During the trial, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/pop-culture\/celebrity\/experts-question-phrase-mutual-abuse-testimony-johnny-depp-amber-heard-rcna25461\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">terms like \u201cmutual abuse\u201d<\/a> and \u201creactive abuse\u201d gained traction \u2014 sometimes offering language for survivors, but also, experts say, muddying distinctions around accountability.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-eee33e\" class=\"body-graf\">Recent research, including a 2024 review of 64 studies, has suggested that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/386189016_Bidirectional_and_Unidirectional_Intimate_Partner_Violence_A_Comprehensive_Review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">more than half of intimate partner violence is bidirectional<\/a>, according to Tracy, who has amassed over 146,000 followers on her @the.truth.doctor Instagram page.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0c5347\" class=\"body-graf\">There are different types of bidirectional intimate partner violence, she added, including \u201cintimate terrorism,\u201d where violence is developed from a pattern of coercive control, and \u201csituational couple violence,\u201d which comes from conflicts escalating.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0d2dfd\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThe number one reason found in the research for this behavior is to get back at a partner for emotionally hurting them, followed by stress, jealousy, and trying to express anger they can\u2019t put into words,\u201d Tracy wrote in an email interview with NBC News.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-fdd705\" class=\"body-graf\">The \u201cprimary aggressor\u201d in these dynamics is \u201coften the person who poses the most serious threat, not who necessarily struck first,\u201d she wrote. \u201cAnd men and women are shown to engage in different types and levels of violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c192ba\" class=\"body-graf\">However, Tracy said, she refrains from speculating on the dynamic between Paul and Mortensen, adding that people online also don\u2019t have all the facts to make an accurate assessment.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d45354\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of emotionality in the discourse around this situation, and that makes complete sense given what we\u2019re talking about,\u201d Tracy wrote in her email. \u201cPeople who have been victims are often retraumatized watching this type of content online. I get why people who\u2019ve watched every episode feel confident in their assessment, but as a therapist, that\u2019s just not how it works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-1ab054\" class=\"body-graf\">Armchair diagnosis by the public is \u201coften harmful, and often incorrect,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-ceadd5\" class=\"body-graf\">While the details of what exactly occurred that night are not immediately clear, police records and bodycam footage seem to highlight Paul\u2019s aggression toward Mortensen. The incident was even featured as a storyline in the first season of \u201cMormon Wives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-914898\" class=\"body-graf\">In the indictment against Paul, which cites a video, police say Mortensen had \u201credness and swelling around his eyes, swelling on his elbow, scratches on his fingers, and a laceration on his neck\u201d from the incident. The indictment also notes that in the video, Paul\u2019s daughter is struck in the head while she is on the couch.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4cec99\" class=\"body-graf\">The video also came amid reports of a separate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmz.com\/2026\/03\/15\/secret-lives-of-mormon-wives-production-paused-taylor-dakota\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">domestic violence incident involving both Paul and Mortensen<\/a>, which spurred a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/pop-culture\/pop-culture-news\/taylor-frankie-paul-secret-lives-of-mormon-wives-filming-paused-rcna263975\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pause in filming for the fifth season of \u201cMormon Wives<\/a>\u201d after concern from her castmates.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f10a43\" class=\"body-graf\">After production halted, a spokesperson for the Draper Police Department in Utah told People that \u201callegations have been made in both directions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2e48b7\" class=\"body-graf\">As the situation continues to make headlines, others online have suggested the \u201creactive abuse\u201d narrative is actually harmful.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1774482421686_now_hallie_tfy_3rdinvest_260325_S3_1920x1080-6jph7u.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-964f35\" class=\"body-graf\">In one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reels\/DWHO7rxkVG5\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">response<\/a> to the TMZ video, Ariel Hendrix, a domestic violence advocate who says she\u2019s a survivor herself, noted that claiming Paul\u2019s violence was the result of provocation can be triggering for some survivors to hear.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-6d532a\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cDo you know what is the most frustrating thing as a domestic violence victim is? Is when someone looks at you and says: \u2018Well, why did he do that? What did you do to provoke him to make him act so crazy like that?\u2019\u201d Hendrix said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s exactly what y\u2019all are saying about Taylor here in this situation: \u2018Well, what did he do to provoke her?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-eb3917\" class=\"body-graf\">Therapist Jeff Guenther, known on Instagram to his 1.5 million followers as TherapyJeff, said while it\u2019s possible \u201creactive abuse\u201d does apply to Paul\u2019s case, the term has also become a \u201cget-out-of-jail-free card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a93339\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cIt is rare that we witness a man be a victim of domestic violence, and in these moments, it\u2019s important that we don\u2019t imply he had it coming or deserved it, because that\u2019s exactly what stops other men from coming forward in similar situations,\u201d Guenther <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reels\/DWH-MqIgYyY\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said in a recent video<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-eff245\" class=\"body-graf\">He said that his own experiences with abusive women in his family \u201chave been minimized my entire life because of their gender.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-579fe5\" class=\"body-graf\">Unconscious bias can potentially play a role in public determinations, Tracy also noted.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2317c3\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWhen it comes to abuse bias, research shows female-onto-male violence is seen as less serious (it shouldn\u2019t be), and that gender bias influences the perception of any gender who is being harmed,\u201d Tracy said. \u201cThe harm of that is justification of abuse, which is not okay under any circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-964206\" class=\"body-graf\">Regardless of what led to the physical altercation, many online criticized Paul and Mortensen for putting a child in that type of situation.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-65c4fb\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cI\u2019m not discounting that both parties can be completely toxic,\u201d \u201cReal Housewives of New York\u201d star Bethenny Frankel said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@bethennyfrankel\/video\/7619161327889566990\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recent video<\/a>. \u201cThe fact remains that there was a child in a video where someone threw furniture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-07b33f\" class=\"endmark body-graf\">If you or someone you know is facing domestic violence, call the National Domestic Violence hotline for help at (800) 799-SAFE (7233), or go to www.thehotline.org for more.
