While every Foo Fighters song may be written with the live show in mind, Grohl admitted that ‘Home’ would probably never meet the live stage.

As the band started to make their way through the 2000s, though, they were almost in danger of looking particularly one-note on their records. Even though The Colour and the Shape and There is Nothing Left to Lose were brilliant in their own ways, One By One was the moment where it seemed like they were going to run out of gas if they didn’t get some fresh ideas.

Between working on projects with Queens of the Stone Age and Nine Inch Nails, Grohl started to make music that was far too mellow than what Foo Fighters had been used to. Instead of cutting a solo album of material, In Your Honour was the result of Grohl shoving both of his artistic identities against each other, featuring one side of stadium rock and the other of reflective ballads.

That duality became a defining part of Grohl’s songwriting during this period. Rather than choosing between aggression and introspection, he seemed intent on exploring both extremes, often within the same project. It gave the Foo Fighters a broader emotional range, even if it occasionally left the band searching for cohesion.

At the same time, it revealed a more vulnerable side to Grohl that hadn’t always been front and centre in earlier releases. Stripping things back allowed him to focus less on volume and more on feeling, creating songs that relied on sincerity rather than sheer power to make an impact.

(Credits: Far Out / Raphael Pour-Hashemi)

While the album would sell like gangbusters thanks to tracks like ‘Best Of You’, Grohl was starting to wonder if there was any middle ground between their mellow audience and their stadiums of rock fans. After record mogul Clive Davis gave him the idea of bringing both genres together, Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace was the result of Grohl trying to balance both of his sonic loves.

Although the album is a solid listen, there are a few moments where it feels like the band burned through their creative stamina too quickly. When you start an album with something as amazing as ‘The Pretender’, any song that was going to come after it was going to feel dull by comparison anyway.

While ‘But Honestly’ was able to match the opening track with a huge buildup, ‘Home’ is the kind of introspective ballad that would have fit right in on the back half of In Your Honour. Featuring Grohl singing with a piano, the entire track is a small downtempo ditty about Grohl finally making his way back home after the long musical journey we’ve just been on.

Even though Grohl did have some strong connections with the track, he admitted that he had no idea if it would have translated to the live stage, saying, “It made me feel quite vulnerable, so much so that it’s hard to listen to. I get really choked up thinking about all the time I spend away from the things that are important to me…It’s the kind of song I can’t imagine singing live because it’s going to be too much.”

While the band have never found a good time to perform the track, the addition of new member Rami Jaffee on keyboards leaves the door open for them to bring some new songs into the setlist. As much as Grohl prides himself on being in a kickass rock outfit, ‘Home’ may be a good excuse for him to flex his Elton John chops onstage.

ADD AS A PREFERRED SOURCE ON GOOGLE

[28
12135,156,4951,157,111,139,69
0":"post-354041","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-music","8":"tag-dave-grohl","9":"tag-entertainment","10":"tag-foo-fighters","11":"tag-music","12":"tag-new-zealand","13":"tag-newzealand","14":"tag-nz
["GET
