(AP: Mark Schiefelbein, File)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">However, as the dust has settled in the years since, the race to advance gene editing has shown no signs of slowing down, spurred on by starry-eyed Silicon Valley investors, entrepreneurs and <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-07-30\/americas-pronatalism-movement-driven-by-trump-musk-vance\/105582208\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105582208\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">even pronatalists<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">And by April this year, He Jiankui was back \u2014 announcing a new venture aimed at editing human embryos to create people resistant to diseases like Alzheimer&#8217;s or cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Months later, his ex-wife Cathy Tie unveiled Manhattan Project \u2014 <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/the-bride-of-chinese-frankenstein-and\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the first company to publicly announce plans<\/a> to create gene-edited babies, promising to prevent &#8220;thousands of diseases&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But although this science is advancing, it remains deeply controversial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">On the one hand, gene editing heralds hope of a future free from genetic disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But on the other, it strikes fear of a spiral into eugenics and so-called &#8220;designer babies&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Like &#8216;installing a new app&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Gene editing tech first emerged in the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It acts like scissors, snipping DNA at certain spots so scientists can erase, add or replace sections.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/science\/2016-04-08\/crispr-gene-editing-technology-explainer\/7217782\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">What is CRSPR gene editing?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">ABC Science&#8217;s Bernie Hobbs explains what the gene editing tool CRISPR is and how it works.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s as if you were given a new smartphone and you could never change it,&#8221; Australian molecular biologist and genetics expert Merlin Crossley says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And then suddenly you had a way of installing a new app.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In 2009, a revolutionary <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/science\/2016-04-08\/crispr-gene-editing-technology-explainer\/7217782\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/7217782\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new editing tool called CRISPR<\/a> burst onto the scene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Invented by <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2020-10-07\/emmanuelle-charpentier-jennifer-doudna-nobel-chemistry-prize\/12741596\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/12741596\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nobel Prize winners Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer Doudna<\/a>, it&#8217;s simpler, faster, cheaper and more accurate than older tech.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But this breakthrough stoked fears about &#8220;designer babies&#8221; \u2014 embryos or fetuses whose genetic make-up has been purposefully selected or altered to achieve &#8220;desired&#8221; traits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It sounds like the stuff of science fiction, but there&#8217;s been broader movement in this space, in addition to He Jiankui&#8217;s twins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In 2009, a US fertility clinic announced plans to screen embryos for &#8220;cosmetic&#8221; (Unsplash)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Meanwhile in 2020, the <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.library.columbia.edu\/index.php\/bioethics\/article\/view\/9467\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first child was born<\/a> following polygenic embryo screening, which estimates an embryo&#8217;s chances of developing complex traits or health conditions influenced by thousands of genetic variations \u2014 not just a single gene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In the end, Baby Aurea&#8217;s embryo was selected, as she had the best odds of avoiding future common diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and schizophrenia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The company behind this, US-based Genomic Prediction, is not alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\"><a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12156276\/\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Several other commercial enterprises<\/a> are cashing in on this space, screening not just for disease but also non-disease traits \u2014 such as height or IQ.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An embryo receives a small dose of Cas9 protein and PCSK9 sgRNA in a sperm injection microscope.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/e0c64034c5ef4b5318ea4000748009ab\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">An embryo receives a small dose of Cas9 protein and PCSK9 sgRNA in a sperm injection microscope in a laboratory in Shenzhen. (Unsplash: Warren Umoh)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Professor Savulescu calls this the &#8220;Gattaca objection&#8221; \u2014 referencing a 1997 dystopian film about a future society where children are genetically selected to ensure the best traits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That&#8217;s why you need to deliberately decide how you make [gene editing] available,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Is it available only through the market at a high price? (ABC News: Danielle Bonica)<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It&#8217;s not going to be designer babies&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">No gene editing therapy for the treatment of humans has been approved in Australia yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">You can face up to 15 years in prison if you make any heritable changes to a human genome.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dianne Nicol, distinguished emeritus professor of law at the University of Tasmania, says there&#8217;ll have to be &#8220;a dramatic change to Australian laws&#8221; before this will change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But to my mind, it&#8217;s a long way off,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Safety remains one of the greatest obstacles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In particular, there are serious concerns about &#8220;off-target mutations&#8221; \u2014 unintended genetic changes that can occur during gene editing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;You can trial it in rabbits and primates but at some point you have to say, &#8216;We&#8217;re going to try it in human beings,'&#8221; Professor Sparrow says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And it&#8217;s quite hard to know whether that&#8217;s safe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A close-up shot of a newborn baby's hand inside an adult hand.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/aec1594a62a6f207c1289174723874de\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A new IVF technique used to prevent mitochondrial disease has been successful in the UK, a study shows. (ABC: Kala Lampard)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Professor Savulescu says it&#8217;s anyone&#8217;s guess how long it&#8217;ll be before polygenic editing becomes mainstream.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Things either go much slower than predicted or much faster,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Right now, most gene editing is in the &#8220;experimental lab space&#8221;, according to Professor Crossley, but he believes this tech could be used to cure genetic diseases in babies in &#8220;less than 100 years&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">As for fears about the future of genetics \u2014 Professor Crossley says people shouldn&#8217;t worry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There will be medical treatments,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But it&#8217;s not going to be designer babies.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s been seven years since Chinese biophysicist He Jiankui made an announcement that shocked the world&#8217;s scientists.
