What if it is the opposite?<\/p>\n<p>            <a href=\"https:\/\/images.theconversation.com\/files\/723745\/original\/file-20260313-58-zu7tg0.jpg?ixlib=rb-4.1.0&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=1000&amp;fit=clip\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/file-20260313-58-zu7tg0.jpg\" class=\"native-lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>              Many plants disappear in the Succulent Karoo\u2019s baking hot summer.<br \/>\n              <a class=\"source\" href=\"https:\/\/jzoblog.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/figure-1.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Courtesy Carsten Schradin.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Animals have adapted over millions of years to cope with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0169534722003299\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">harsh environments<\/a> \u2013 places where food and water is scarce for long periods, and that are very hot or extremely cold. For example, striped mice (Rhabdomys pumilio) in the semi-arid Succulent Karoo of South Africa have adapted to their long, dry and food-restricted summers by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0169534723001854\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">suppressing their stress<\/a> hormone levels, metabolism and activity.<\/p>\n<p>This allows the tiny, 60 gram rodents to save energy and survive the harshness of the place they\u2019re living in. This is now known as a harshness response. <\/p>\n<p>Adaptations to such harsh environments are very different to adaptations to stressful environments. Animals usually respond to harsh environments by reducing energy expenditure, for example by hibernating. On the other hand, they respond to stressful environments by fighting hard for survival. In other words, stress tells an animal: invest energy to fight or flee. I have been leading a team who studied the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/current-biology\/fulltext\/S0960-9822(18)30163-5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">African striped mouse<\/a> in the Succulent Karoo semi-desert in South Africa for over 25 years to understand how being flexible in their behaviour and their bodily responses allows them to succeed in a changing world. <\/p>\n<p>We carried out extensive behavioural observations of the mice in the field. We also collected blood samples to measure hormones and other markers of health (similar to those measured by doctors for humans).<\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly, we did not find any indication that striped mice were stressed by their harsh environment. This is important because harsh environments will become even harsher under climate change. Food plants are superabundant in spring (September to December), but these dry up in summer. The green, colourful landscape transforms into a brown, sandy desert, leaving the striped mice with very little to eat.<\/p>\n<p>However, they\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/zslpublications.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/jzo.70084\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">evolved multiple ways<\/a> to deal with low food availability in summer. They reduce the secretion of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0018506X08000044?via%3Dihub\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stress<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.biologists.com\/jeb\/article\/220\/5\/837\/18934\/Both-thyroid-hormone-levels-and-resting-metabolic\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">metabolic<\/a> hormones, basically turning down their internal engines and burning less energy.<\/p>\n<p>      Read more:<br \/>\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/mass-animal-extinctions-our-new-tool-can-show-why-large-mammals-like-the-topi-are-in-decline-233882\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mass animal extinctions: our new tool can show why large mammals \u2013 like the topi \u2013 are in decline<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In this way, they <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00360-018-1168-z\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reduce<\/a> the amount of energy they use daily in summer by 30%. In lowering their metabolism, they automatically <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00360-018-1168-z\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reduce the amount of water<\/a> they use too. This is crucial to survive in a food and water restricted environment. <\/p>\n<p>Another interesting energy saving tactic is where the striped mice temporarily shrink the organ that uses the most energy \u2013 their <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s42991-023-00383-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brain<\/a>!  (This phenomenon is known as the Dehnel\u2019s effect, first reported from shrews surviving the food restricted winter in Europe.) Nights in the semi-desert can be cold even in summer, so the mice <a href=\"https:\/\/besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1365-2435.2006.01074.x\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">warm each other in the nest<\/a> to save energy. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/zslpublications.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/jzo.70084\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Our research showed<\/a> clearly that striped mice survive the dry season not by activating their stress response and fighting back against harsh conditions \u2013 they find ways to survive and <a href=\"https:\/\/zslpublications.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/jzo.70084\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">endure it<\/a> instead. <\/p>\n<p>The power of quiet endurance<\/p>\n<p>In animals, a response to harshness (finding ways to endure) is the opposite of a physiological stress response, when an animal\u2019s adrenal glands release hormones to overcome stress.<\/p>\n<p>These stress hormones activate energy for the animal to react. That\u2019s the famous fight or flight response. But not all animals can escape or fight all bad conditions. For example, droughts are expected to become more common and more severe. To survive, animals must either escape these conditions through migration or cope by saving energy and water. When harsh environmental conditions are simply mislabelled as stressful environments, this can mislead conservation efforts.<\/p>\n<p>The human experience can be very similar. Imagine yourself investing time and energy into problems that cannot be solved by trying harder, but can only be endured until conditions improve. Creating<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0169534722003299\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unnecessary stress<\/a> for yourself in a situation like this doesn\u2019t help at all \u2013 it only induces suffering and illness. <\/p>\n<p>Modern life contains many situations where it is worth asking whether a challenge requires action, endurance, or change. <\/p>\n<p>What needs to happen next<\/p>\n<p>Species that did not evolve in harsh environments, and which also cannot migrate, will need to reduce the amount of energy they use, enabling them to endure harshness. For example, to prevent animals from being startled by tourists such as hikers, or by stray dogs. Even animals that have evolved ways of enduring harshness must be supported to avoid stress that would increase energy expenditure. <\/p>\n<p>In an energy-limited environment, increasing the amount of energy animals expend on trying to survive can be the difference between life and death.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"For decades, ecologists lumped everything bad for animals under one word: stress.
